Iowa doesn't play OSU or Michigan in 2007-2008

The mile actually started the post to complain about iowa, not to talk about expanding to a 12 team big10, mili. I'd say this thread is a pretty decent one, as I doubt many of us had checked Iowa's schedule nor cared who exactly our 2 missing big10 members were for 3 years from now.
that doesn't bother me honestly. in fact its the exact reason why the big 10 will likely always be the big 2 and then everyone else. if your a team in the big 10 and don't play tOSU and or scum every season... its hard to quantify winning the big 10 and calling yourself a big 10 powerhouse isn't it? if iowa really wants to make it the big 3 instead of the big 2, they will rework their schedule accordingly the same as tOSU and scum has. not dissing their success as of late, its just that a big 10 season isn't a big 10 season without a game against tOSU and or scum.

2 items that should be implemented immediately.

one, a tie breaker game. if two teams hav ethe same record and haven't played each other, they play a tie breaker game to determine the conference championship. host it either at a neurtral site or at the higher ranked teams home.

two, NFL style conference scheduling. the best teams in conference of the past X years skip the weaker teams (with protected rivalries still). the worst teams in conference the past X years skip the best teams in conference.

What would probably happen is the bucks and iowa would go undefeated in 2007 or whenever, AND thus would be ranked #1 & #2 in the "whichever-retarded-method-of-deciding-on-a-title-game" poll/ratings. Then the NC game would also be the big10 title game! everyone would be happy! win-win! now lets all look at the gorrilla's signature for the rest of the off-season.

Bullshit. What pressure? So what if we have a "split" championship? "Conference championship" games do not determine "true" conference champions and serve no other purpose other than make extra broadcast money. Take the 2003 Big 12 title game for example. Oklahoma was undefeated, 8-0 in conference, and was dominating nearly everyone they played. Even so, they were forced to play a decent K-State team that had nothing to lose (6-2 in conference), and got ambushed. So, Oklahoma finished "second" in their conference despite having a better conference record (8-1 vice K-State's 7-2). If that's not bullshit, I don't know what is. Besides, the Big Ten has enough tie-breakers to determine conference representatives if need be.

Also, no schedule whining allowed here. The fact that Iowa doesn't play The Big Two this season is purely a scheduling quirk, and some planned event.
I AGREE! FUCK DIVISION "TITLE" GAMES!

If PSU could learn to beat scUM once in a while I might reconsider - but since they can't even consistently beat Minny they should be shown the door.

We've all seen prominent teams go through their down cycles; OU, Neb, USC - heck even us.

But as long as Joe Pa is till captain of the ship, they will continue to sink.

joe pa isn't the problem. if they stay independants they make 3 runs at a nc only to finish in the top 10 with 1 loss seasons since they joined. if penn state started playing an independate schedule again they would be a top team again immediately. in the big 10, they are just another mid tier team at best.

I seem to remember there was not a whole lot of controversy in the B10 in '02 when we had 2 undefeated teams in the B10...

Iowa could be a middle of the road team in '07-'08 we just have to wait and see... worry about it when we get there. We may even have a playoff by then :roll1:

Penn State will not be leaving the BigTen anytime soon. There is too much benefit for them on the academic AND athletic side of the "coin". The Big Ten will not be asking them to leave either. In over 100 years, the Big Ten has never asked anyone to leave the conference. They take their time and make decisions for the long term. Inviting Penn State to the Big Ten was just such a decision. Talk all you want about PSU's football program, but the marriage runs MUCH deeper than that. The only school to leave the Big Ten (for more than a few seasons) is Chicago. And they only left the athletic side of the conference. Someone correct me here, but I believe they are still heavily connected to the Big Ten in the areas of Academics and Research.

And where does this dream of a round-robin conference schedule come from? The Big Ten has ONLY achieved this (in football) in 3 different years. 1982, 1983 and 1984 are the ONLY years where Big Ten football teams played everyone else in the conference. In every other season of Big Ten play (football) there has been some sort of rotating schedule. Is it fair that some teams miss out on playing Michigan or Ohio State in a given year? Maybe not, but that's the way it's always been. There is no conspiracy at work. No nefarious mastemind at the Big Ten attempting to give teams unfair advantages. I guess I'm saying don't fool yourselves into thinking something has changed. Big Ten Football is not operating (fundamentally) any different than it ever has.

Purdue's Joe Tiller got the best comment on this: "I've got Ohio State and Michigan right where I want them; off of my schedule." Some may make light of such situations but there was a rush of news when Purdue got to midseason undefeated in the conference and did not have to play the next two teams in the standings, OSU and UM.

3Yards - you are correct about the University of Chicago. They are still connected to the Big Ten via the CIC (academic side of the Big Ten).

I don't see Penn State dropping out of the Big Ten and I hope they don't. They have been a great addition to the Big Ten since joining. Once Joe Pa leaves you will see Penn State rise again. Too much talent in Pa (a lot like Ohio) for Penn State to be down for too long. Another sleeping giant (a lot like Ohio State) that will awake with new blood.

For Iowa, I have to given them credit from reading their boards. Most of their fans are pissed about missing Ohio State and scUM. To their credit they believe that to be the best you must beat the best. Most schools in the Big Ten want Ohio State and/or scUM on their schedule. It makes selling tickets a lot easier if you have them on your schedule (how many times has Northwestern had sellouts due to Ohio State and scUM fans).

As far as adding a 12th school, I have mixed emotions. If it is the right school with academics/athletics - fine. But to add a school for a playoff just does not add anything. We would all be in a situation like the SEC/Big 12 where you have a real poor opportunity to play a team twice. It is so hard to beat a good team twice and if you do, you were expected to win anyway (UCLA 1975). Do you think Iowa would want to play us in a championship game at the end of last season - I don't think so (not saying we win or lose but Iowa knows they would have a tiger by the tail).

A championship game is nice for deciding a champion, does add some revenue to each school and does highlight the Big Ten from a PR perspective. A championship game would bring something like 10-15 million - a little over a million per school. Glen Mason once said that a 12th game (not championship game) for each school would mean more financially than a conference championship game.

I have a couple of problems with adding a 12th team. I don't have a problem with the fact that adding the 12th team means dividing bowl money to another share. (I don't see the money, so do what you want with it.) I also don't have an issue with the fact that the 12th team can add a championship game, making more money for the conference. Again, its not my money. And I DON'T have a problem with sometimes playing a team twice - if you want to be the champions, maybe you should have to beat a team twice. However, I DO have a problem with this: how do you divide the teams? Geographically, you almost need to divide them East/West. That would put Ohio State and Michigan in the East, and they'd never play each other for the championship. If you divide them some other way (random, for instance), and you put them in different divisions, Ohio State and Michigan would play about every other year. Both options are absurd.

And I say BOOOO to letting ND in. We gave them their chance and they poo-poo'd it. If you NEED a twelfth team, shove it up ND's you-know-what and invite Louisville or Marshall. I know neither belongs in the Big Ten, but can you imagine how pissed ND would be?

Of course, if a 12th team is added, it will be ND. They have too much of a fan base to pass up.

Also, someone stated that the fact that Iowa doesn't play OSU or UM in 07 and 08 isn't a conspiracy. Did I miss something? I didn't see anyone accuse the Big Ten of such. I understood the complaint as that the whole issue is unfair. (Not playing OSU or UM makes for an easier schedule than playing them both.)

I agree that it's unfair, but we shouldn't whine about it. Iowa's goal is still the same: win all their games. Same as Ohio State's goal and Northwestern's goal.

Besides, remember how much fun we all had at the bar for a month arguing about Ohio State and Iowa in 2002? I thought it was fun (especially since Trev Alberts looked like the biggest fool on TV).
