News on Snyder, Mayo, and former Buckeye recruit Brandon Barrett...Ohio State's Snyder shoots down coaching rumors
Rumors had Mark Snyder's name etched as Marshall's next football coach as early as today, following last Wednesday's retirement of Bob Pruett.
Snyder, an Ohio State defensive coordinator and former Marshall player, squelched those rumors Wednesday by saying he knew nothing.
His name has popped up on several newspaper sites and Internet message boards as a candidate for the Marshall coaching job.
"Mark would be perfect for that job," Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel told The Akron Beacon Journal. "Eleven of the last 15 years he's been on my staff and every year on his goal sheet was to be the head coach at Marshall University."
Marshall Athletic Director Bob "Kayo" Marcum has said he has received over 50 inquiries for the job. In the meantime, Larry Kueck is serving as interim head coach. He is also in the running for the job.
Former Marshall quarterback Chad Pennington told a Huntington newspaper that Kueck is ready for the job, after serving as an assistant for 30 years.
Beckley's Slay on the shelf
Tamar Slay's left ankle has kept him off the NBA court since Dec. 14. Now, it appears the former Beckley and Marshall standout is done for the year.
Charlotte Bobcats Coach Bernie Bickerstaff said Slay will miss the remainder of the season following arthroscopic surgery on the ankle.
In eight games this year, Slay averaged 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in 9.8 minutes.
Mayo wins Ohio high school player of the year
Huntington native O.J. Mayo secured Ohio's high school Division III Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive year after leading his Cincinnati-based North College Hill team to this weekend's state tournament in Columbus.
Mayo, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, averaged 28.9 points this year for the Trojans. Another Huntington native, and sophomore teammate, Bill Walker was named to Division III's second-team after averaging 20 ppg.
North College Hill (25-1) plays Friday at 10:45 a.m. in the state semifinals. A win would vault them into Saturday's 5:15 p.m. final at Value City Arena.
Barrett pleads no contest to DUI charge
A former high school football standout recruited to play at West Virginia University has pleaded no contest to a charge of first-offense driving under the influence.
Brandon Barrett, 20, of Martinsburg was ordered to serve 24 hours in jail and pay a $100 fine, plus court costs and a $75 DUI fee.
A possession of marijuana charge was dismissed during Tuesday's hearing before Berkeley County Magistrate Harry Snow.
Barrett was charged on Oct. 16 with two misdemeanors after he was pulled over for driving erratically, police said. Martinsburg Police Department Patrolman W.A. Parks alleged in court records that while searching Barrett he found 3 grams of marijuana in a plastic bag in Barrett's left shoe.
Barrett, a second-semester freshman at WVU and two-time state player of the year, said he expects to play football for the Mountaineers in the upcoming season.
He was ruled ineligible to play for WVU in 2004 for academic reasons.
