Injuries and artificial turf

In todays game thread some folks were referencing the increase in injuries since we went back to artificial turf. I just stumbled on the following article referencing how the NFL Players union wants to ban, “Slit firm turf fields.” Does anyone know if that’s the type we have in the Shoe?

It is…

The only thing I’d caution is injuries are up an insane percentage the last 2 years.

Make of it what you will…

Yoga should be a mandatory addition to all sports training regimens. "Longer muscles are stronger muscles" and flexibility in some of these joints would relieve some, but not all, of these injuries. It's just a brutal part of a brutal game.
I assume that is included these days but I could very easily be wrong.

OHIO STATE DOES NOT PLAN TO CHANGE PLAYING SURFACE AT OHIO STADIUM DESPITE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT TURF SAFETY

Although the Ohio State athletic department has had conversations about the field at Ohio Stadium amid calls from the NFL Players’ Association to ban the type of turf the Buckeyes play on, Ohio State does not currently plan to replace the playing surface inside the Shoe.
.
.
.
While Ryan Day said Tuesday that he was unaware of the NFLPA’s campaign, Ohio State spokesperson Jerry Emig said administrators in the athletic department have “had some discussions” about turf safety in response to a question about the NFLPA’s campaign during Tuesday’s press conference.

That said, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said he does not anticipate any changes to Ohio Stadium’s playing surface after this season or in the near future when asked by Eleven Warriors if that was a possibility.

The current turf at Ohio Stadium was just installed this past summer, replacing the previous turf which had been in place from 2014-21. Before the season, the new playing surface – known as Safelite Field for sponsorship reasons – drew praise from Ryan Day and multiple Ohio State players. Day described the new turf, which is also utilized on Ohio State’s indoor field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, as “state-of-the-art, really nice fields,” and TreVeyon Henderson (who is among the Ohio State players that have missed time with lower-extremity injuries this season) said the turf is “way better” than what the Buckeyes played on in 2021.

Emig said Ohio State tests its fields twice yearly to ensure they are safe to play on and will continue to do that moving forward.

NEXT UP, NEW TURF. I want to write a letter to the Ohio State athletic department that reads:

Dear Ross Bjork,
Ohio Stadium needs new turf.
Signed,
Chase Brown
I have considered it. I won’t do it. But I have considered it.

Ohio Stadium needs new turf or a grass surface. That’s been a message I’ve seen circulated on social media since Saturday when Will Howard and several other Buckeyes and Boilermakers skated all over the stadium’s slit-film turf – turf that was installed two years ago!

Despite its newness, the turf has looked unsafe in the 20 games Ohio State has played on it since the start of the 2022 season. And it’s not like the turf looks aesthetic, either, as the great black gobs of greasy grimy pellets overwhelm the green, scarlet and white turf.

The bottom line is that Ohio State’s turf is a bad look for one of America’s top college football programs. It will continue to be a bad look until Bjork and the school’s athletic department make changes.

Now, I’m not a turf expert. I won’t pretend to know what those changes should be. However, I do know that Ohio State receives between $80 million and $100 million annually from the Big Ten’s media deal with FOX, CBS and NBC – a deal the Buckeyes have earned in 2024 with six games on FOX (!) as well as two on CBS, one on NBC and one on Peacock. (More on that in a moment).

Perhaps Bjork and the athletic department can head to Ohio State’s top-10-ranked turf management school, talk options and then invest some of that cash to improve the turf, install new turf or, the best of all three options, install some grass.

No matter the solution, Ohio Stadium’s surface needs to be better – It needs to be better! – and I hope the Buckeyes work to improve it as soon as possible.

Just sayin': Do you think Ohio Stadium's current turf needs to be replaced?

Perhaps we should pay Scott's to put their name on the field instead of Safelite and take care of actual grass. It could be Scott's Lawn at Ohio Stadium.
Football needs to be played outdoors on grass. (I've read all the reasons it isn't practical/possible at the Shoe, so chalk this up as my one unhinged fan opinion)
