Indians Tidbits (2009 season)

Mongo v2.0

Grover would be a popular pick with the fans, but a bad move. He had some some of the most talented teams in baseball in the 90's and still couldn't deliver a title. I may never forgive him for his handling of the '99 series vs. Boston.

It would be like the Cavs firing Mike Brown and bringing back Mike Fratello...a lazy hire.

Eh, as much as he did mishandle that series... I mean, shit, he didn't tell Dave Burba and Co. to throw batting practice.

And, yeah, I mean, there's the thing, he had some of the most talented offenses in Baseball in the 90's.

'97? Yeah... that never should have gone to 7.

But, by '99 it was homerun derby on that staff...

I actually thought Grover did a nice job considering the pitching that he had at his disposal generally-- despite Hart's efforts, he never had a rotation after '95-- and that team led the League (IIRC) in ERA without Black Jack McDowell or Bob Ojeda (for all intents and purposes). Imean, the guy got results out of Eric Plunk sometimes.

Anyway, I'm not saying it's the right move, I'm just saying that a Shapiro team might be a better fit for him.... I mean, shit... this is a tought lineup card...

Uh... yeah... who do I start today?

Lofton
Vizquel
Alomar
Ramirez
Thome

What's that? Thome's hurt... uhh, okay... Giles, Sexon, someone....

Justice

Etc.

as far as pitching coach goes

from

Indians Prospect Insider

Also, Triple-A Columbus Pitching Coach Scott Radinsky looks to be almost a given to assume the pitching coach duties no matter who the manager ends up being. Radinsky is well received in the system and one of the better pitching coaches in the minors. He also has an excellent rapport with his players, and is very familiar with every pitcher who should make up a very young staff in Cleveland in 2010 and beyond.

Eh, maybe I'm just bitter. If Grover was 5-10 years younger...maybe I don't have an issue, but he's 60 now. That and his resume after leaving Cleveland was subpar to be kind. There absolutely could be worse hires (Showalter for instance), but I think bringing back Grover would be a lazy, uninspired hire. I don't expect a splash, just somebody with fresh ideas, compitency and an ability to develop young talent.

I don't believe manager is as important as a HC in football. They rarely are difference makers on the positive side, but can definately be a detriment...especially to young teams.

Hey, to these guys, Grover is fresh.... none of them know him.

At any rate... if he said in the offeason, just generally, "Hey, I'm bored of Liberal KS... I want to manage again" I mean, he's got the resume that any team needs to consider, really.

Anyway, I'm not necessarily in favor of it... but, if you put together a list of 5 guys with previous experience, who are available, he has to have one of the the top 3 to 5 resumes.

And, I'm not sure his age is that big an issue.... I mean, you can't expect anyone to do this for more than 5 years... how the fuck old is Leyland? Either you know how to do this or you don't.

You may be right. I don't think I'd be pissed at the hire, just "meh". I think I'd prefer Lovullo...just so long ass it isn't Showalter.

I wouldn't be offended by Bobby Valentine either because I could probably steal "Guy Incognito's" old avatar.

Rosenthal also appeared on the MLB Network this evening for a chat about Eric Wedge, who was fired as Indians manager this morning. Rosenthal believes Wedge will garner interest from teams looking for a new skipper as soon as next season. "This is going to be a hot guy," said Rosenthal. "Someone is going to hire Eric Wedge on the rebound, and someone is going to get a great manager."

:slappy: whoever hires him, good luck

Oh, "on the rebound" always works out for everyone involved.

As long as you just fuck her, and don't marry her...

Err... never mind.

Anyway, I'm sure Wedge will end up doing well, he's young, and as much as the the Indians need a fresh face, so does he, probably.

The Indians were one win away from the World Series two years ago, 5 years after Wedge took over a rebuilding job. A lot of managers have tried to do similar things, and failed, so don't assume the next guy will automatically be better.

I don't pay enough attention to the Tribe to have a strong opinion on Wedge but I do know the talent level declined since 2007, through no fault of his own. Cleveland better look at their front office's performance as well.
