Indians Tidbits (2007 Season)

Ready to settle scores

A confident Joe Borowski is long past his doubts as he takes over as the Tribe's closer
Sunday, April 01, 2007 Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
Joe Borowski can take a punch. His career is a testi mony to it, but even then he isn't the most famous fighter from Bayonne, N.J.
If he's home walking down one side of the street and former heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner is walking down the other, Borowski's path would be the one less-cluttered.
"If I was walking down the street with Joe Schmo, nobody would recognize me," the Indians closer said.

If you're looking for something to make you feel good about Borowski owning the Indians' closer's job, his 36 saves in Florida last season should help. But if you still want assurance after the retirement of Keith Foulke and after sitting through the ninth-inning torture of 2006, well, at least Borowski doesn't come with the nickname The Bayonne Bleeder.

Pessimism outweighs hope among Tribe fans

Where will the Indians finish in 2007?
The Indians will go only as far as their defense, back-end bullpen and shortstop Jhonny Peralta will take them. Look for this to be the year that reliever Fernando Cabrera finally breaks out to be that eighth-inning guy they've needed since they didn't sign Bob Howry.
Word is out that infielder Ryan Garko's glove is even worse than Travis "Pronk" Hafner's, but I think you'll find that his bat will win more games than his glove will lose. Pronk will solidify that he should be the Tribe's No. 1 priority to sign for the future as he comes in a close second in the MVP race.

White Sox, Indians both looking for better results

Monday, April 2, 2007 3:31 AM
By Andrew Seligman

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- The scene at the opener last year was something to behold.

Two jets roared above U.S. Cellular Field, and the Chicago White Sox unveiled a large banner commemorating the 2005 World Series victory -- the city's first since 1917.
Then, they opened the season in grand style, beating the Cleveland Indians 10-4.
Sure, the White Sox won 90 games last season. But all that added up to was third place in the American League Central and a spot in front of the TV during the postseason. The road back to the playoffs -- or the couch -- starts today when they play host to Cleveland again.

Couldn't ask for a much better start than today. :)

Knock the opposing starter out in the 2nd, and pour it on from there! 12-5 final.

I'd worry about the back end of that bullpen. Maybe today was an aberration for Borowski but maybe it wasn't....

Disclaimer: I'm not an Indians fan.

That's been my concern all along. I was underwhelmed by the old age home they brought in this offseason to help. Thing is, relief pitching is a crap shoot, you nnever really know when somebody's gonna get hot.

Heart-stopping catch ends stress-filled game

By Terry Pluto

CHICAGO - What? You were expecting Mariano Rivera?
Tribe fans, your closer is Joe Borowski, and when he saves them, you usually remember them. As one scout described Borowski to me, ``He's sort of a poor man's Bob Wickman. He will keep you on the edge of your seats.''
Like he did in Thursday's 8-7 victory at Chicago.
The game ended with two White Sox players sprinting around the bases, with left fielder Jason Michaels puff, puff, puffing...
Lots of white breath coming from his mouth on this 31-degree day...
As he ran for his life, and the ball, with the left-field wall looming.
It ended with Grady Sizemore realizing ``my heart stopped'' as he watched a desperate Michaels dashing.

Weather won't be hit with Tribe

Cold can wreak havoc on players' pitching

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CHICAGO - Only a few snow flurries fell late Wednesday morning, as the Indians donned stocking caps to take batting practice.
Temperature at first pitch was 31 degrees, with winds out of the northwest at 15 miles per hour at U.S. Cellular Field. That translates to a wind chill of 20 degrees or lower.
The Tribe had better get used to the return of winter. The forecast for the series finale here today and the weekend games in Cleveland calls for no temperature higher than 39 until Tuesday.
Something for the fans to look forward to is the Saturday night game at Jacobs Field. The forecast high during the day is 32. By the 7:05 start, the temperature probably will be in the high 20s with a predicted overnight low of 23.

A blustery victory for Tribe

Michaels keeps eye on ball in Windy City

By Sheldon Ocker

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CHICAGO - This story starts from the end and winds backward.
It's the ninth inning, the last chance for the White Sox to erase the Indians' 8-7 lead. Joe Crede steps to the plate with two outs and runners at first and second, thanks to two Joe Borowski walks.
Crede lifts what appears will be a routine fly to left. But there is a stiff wind blowing toward the fence. Jason Michaels fades back, then begins to hustle. He checks the distance to the wall but maintains eye contact with the ball until he is on the track.
By now, the ball is hurtling downward, and Michaels' body mimics the route of the sphere. Suddenly, there is no time left. Michaels finds himself almost in a sitting position reaching out, the palm of his glove pointing skyward. The ball lands, but where?

A hit batter to end the game, that blows. I was really thinking we would come out of Chicago with a sweep to start the season, that would have been awesome.

Aside from the end of today's game, the guys are looking pretty good. Our Offense shows that they will be putting up some runs this season and Grady showing that he could be mentioned this year for MVP. He's definitely the single most important part of this team, between his Offense and his Defense.

Sizemore sure seems ready to hit in the 3 hole now. Too bad we don't have a true leadoff hitter.

The stars have started out great, and you have to like what you've seen from Peralta between this series and the spring. I also thought Fultz and Michaels both looked good today, if we can continue to get solid preformances from the "peripheral" guys, we'll win a ton of games.

All in all, a good series to start out the season.
