Game Thread Indiana @ Ohio State - 10/06/18, 4:00PM (FOX)

From a story in the DDN:

https://www.daytondailynews.com/spo...more-than-century-old/G6fHn2diVxX2GxAkCQchmM/

Ohio State has lost twice to Indiana since 1952.
The losses came in back-to-back years, and they were both decisive.
The ninth-ranked Hoosiers won 31-10 in 1987 at Ohio Stadium and routed Ohio State 41-7 a year later in Bloomington.
The teams tied at 27in 1990, and Ohio State has won every game since.

I remember those games. The first game signified the end of Earle and second one gave me an inkling that I wouldn't like Cooper.

But the most surprising thing from that article? "the ninth-ranked Hoosers"

Ninth ranked!!! That I don't remember.

Re: Indiana's record against Ohio State since 1987: 2-24-1

Indiana Turns Back Ohio State for First Time in 31 Meetings

October 11, 1987

Despite the rain pounding down at Ohio Stadium, the sky was shining for Indiana. And the downpour only seemed appropriate for Ohio State.

Indiana, which had not beaten an Ohio State football team in its last 31 tries, shocked the No. 9 Buckeyes, 31-10, Saturday.

"I've known about Ohio State football since I was a freshman here in 1949," Buckeye Coach Earle Bruce said. "This is the darkest day in Ohio State football since I have been associated with it."

Indiana Coach Bill Mallory, who was an assistant coach along with Bruce under the late Woody Hayes, knows a little about Ohio State's tradition as well.

"You tell Earle I've had a couple of dark days, too, and I don't want to hear that," Mallory said with a laugh.

"We didn't come in here to lose, and this is a great confidence builder," Mallory said. "Now the people will understand that Indiana plays some great football."

The Hoosiers needed the 200 yards and 2 touchdowns on passes by Dave Schnell, the 126 yards rushing and 1 touchdown by tailback Anthony Thompson and strong performance by its defense to finally break the Buckeye jinx.

Schnell completed 15 of 23 passes, and Thompson had 34 carries.

Indiana outgained Ohio State, 405-264, as the Hoosiers rushed for 205 yards. Ohio State ran for 132 yards and passed for 132 more.

Indiana, 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten, had not beaten an Ohio State team since Oct. 20, 1951. Ohio State (3-1-1, 1-1) had won the last 23 meetings since a scoreless tie in 1959 and had won the seven games preceding that for a 30-0-1 record in the last 31 games.

Ohio State, which had played through offensive difficulties in its first four games, was able to muster only 10 rushing yards in the second half and did not get a first down in the third quarter.

"You saw an Ohio State football team that in the second half got the devil knocked out of them," Bruce said. "Indiana did whatever they wanted to on offense and defense in the second half. I give all the credit to Indiana--they were well prepared and everything they tried was successful."

Mallory said: "All week long we harped on soundness. We wanted the kids to get into it and be on top of it all the way. . . . I think our older kids knew if we came in and made mistakes we would have no chance."

Indiana had no turnovers. Ohio State finished with three, including two on interceptions by Brian Dewitz.

Woody's statement definitely applies this Saturday.

Live Updates from Urban Meyer Radio Show – 10.4.18

Urban-Meyer-Talking-Ohio-State-Foottball.jpg

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer will spend some time on his weekly radio show Thursday afternoon answering questions about the Buckeyes and their upcoming game against the Indiana Hoosiers. He will provide personnel updates on his football team and run through a wide range of topics as it pertains to Ohio State football. Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson will also spend some time answering questions. We will provide live updates right here once the show begins at 12:00 pm. Refresh for the latest updates.

Kevin Wilson
+ Dwayne Haskins has a lot of talent, but watching J.T. Barrett over the previous two years has helped Haskins become a starting quarterback. He can make a lot of throws, but he approaches the game the right way.

+ Wilson will help Greg Studrawa with the offensive line during kicking meetings and times like that because Wilson isn’t a part of the special teams. When there is special teams going on during practice, Wilson will go and help Studrawa with the offensive line.

+ The tight ends are coming along well, but they are falling a little short of being elite and playing at a championship level. Luke Farrell has played with a gimpy ankle the last two weeks, but is doing better. Rashod Berry is settling down more and becoming more consistent. He’s maturing and calming down. He is very, very talented. Wilson mentioned Berry pass blocking during Binjimen Victor’s touchdown, which ended with Berry blocking a second defender near the end zone. Jeremy Ruckert needs to play more and has really come on well. He’s “gonna be a great player.” Jake Hausmann has been dealing with injuries.

+ The Indiana natives on the Ohio State roster are all starting and contributing, but Wilson likes to joke with all of them that they weren’t good enough to be offered by him at Indiana. Mack and McLaurin are complete players and they are men. They are mature. “I’m happy they’re on my side.”

+ Give credit to the culture at Ohio State for the coaching staff getting through the Urban Meyer suspension. Everything is so busy and regimented that they were so involved with the task at hand that there were no distractions when there could have been.

+ Ryan Day did a great job of being himself while he was the head coach.

+ Going against Indiana is always special. There are a bunch of players that he recruited still over there. Last year was very, very difficult because it was the first game and 90% of the guys who ran through the tunnel were brought in by Wilson.

+ Indiana’s offense has some very good players. Wilson should know because he signed them. He rattled off all of the Ohio guys he recruited still on the roster.

+ They loved competing against the Buckeyes. They’d look them in the eyes and get after them, but could never get over the hump. Tom Allen brings that same attitude.

+ Wilson doesn’t need to go over every player with the OSU defense because they didn’t need it last week and sometimes you can drown in too much information.

+ Wilson was told about Tom Allen as a defensive coach at USF. Wilson spoke with him at the coaches convention and they talked for three hours and never really talked scheme. He eventually hired Allen to be the IU defensive coordinator.

+ Structurally, Indiana’s defense is sound and the players know it well. Wilson said it’s the same packaging you saw from TCU. Marcelino Ball presents a lot of problems as a big safety/hybrid linebacker. The IU cornerbacks have to lock it down because they cheat a bit and try to get more hats in the box. They try to rotate as much as they can to keep their players fresh.

+ “It’s hard when it’s loud to go fast.”

Re: It was a physical game last week. Damon Arnette is cleared to play. Dre’Mont Jones will be cleared to play. Dante Booker is probable. Robert Landers will be able to play and will be better than he was last week. He was playing hurt last week.

Great news!!!

IU’s Tom Allen: ‘It’s the most talented Ohio State team I’ve seen’

J.K.-Dobbins-Penn-State-2018.jpg

The No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes moved to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in Big Ten play with last Saturday night’s 27-26 win at No. 9 Penn State. It was the Nittany Lions’ first loss at home since November of 2015.

Two weeks earlier, Ohio State went into the heart of Texas and dispatched with the No. 15 TCU Horned Frogs 40-28.

Neither win was easy, which now means that this Buckeye team has been tested already and they have responded.

Those responses have caught the eye of Indiana head coach Tom Allen, who will bring his Hoosiers to Columbus this weekend for both teams’ third conference game of the season.

“Obviously they played well at Penn State,” Allen said. “Most of us watched that, I’m sure, and to see them do what they did to come from behind and score those last two touchdowns in the last eight minutes to win on the road is a great testament to their program and where they’re at and the level they’re playing at.”

Of course, being able to make a stand like the Buckeyes did in Happy Valley requires the talent to do so, and according to Allen, there is no shortage of talent in the Scarlet and Gray this year.

“I’ve been here for my third season, it’s the most talented Ohio State team I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” he said. “Very, very good football team, on both sides, and special teams, just a lot of playmakers and speed and athleticism and size and very accurate quarterback and very, very athletic defensive unit. So Coach Meyer always has a very talented team that’s well coached and plays extremely hard.”

While Allen has seen a few different versions of the Buckeyes, he’s never seen them with a quarterback like Dwayne Haskins.

Haskins leads the Big Ten in pass efficiency (188.75), passing yards (292.8 avg), touchdowns (19), and yards per attempt (9.5).

Everything about Haskins has made Allen take notice.

“Quick release. He’s big. Very accurate passer, and if he has time he’s deadly,” Allen said. “He’s really, really accurate and got a strong arm. It’s a very different challenge that he creates than since I’ve been here. So just really good football player, and he’s not experienced by any means in terms of multiple years, but he sure plays like he is. He’s got a lot of poise and confidence, and he’s got a lot of weapons around him.”

I see this as a close game for the first half at least. OSU coming off a big win, expected to win easily. I think it will be a closer game than projected, at least until the second half. In this series, OSU tends to come up with a few big plays late to distance themselves from IU.

With all the talk about Iowa now I kinda expect them to blow the doors off of Indiana.

But I'm probably wrong.
