Tom Allen

+ On the fumble at the end of the first half being a critical turning point, Allen said said that was huge. That was a chance for them to score and not only did they not score, but Ohio State got the ball and scored and got the momentum going into half.

+ On Penix as a leader, Allen said as long as there is time on the clock there’s a chance. Penix doesn’t just talk about that, he lives that out. He had tremendous poise. His leadership is pretty special.

+ The tackling was not good, especially on Justin Fields because he is so strong and quick. “A lot of our players couldn’t get him on the ground and that was frustrating.”

+ Ohio State has so much talent on the perimeter. “It’s a catch 22 they put you in because of their talent.”

+ His team stayed the course, had a chance, just weren’t able to do it.

+ He told the team in the locker room that he is proud of the heart, fight, toughness of this team. They truly are special, they just have to play better, but that was a great football team they played. “But to put ourselves in that position, we continued to battle to the very end.”

+ There’s always two or three plays you wish you could get back, the pick-6 was one of those. In a seven point game, those become the difference. “We have to learn from them, correct them, and move forward.”

+ He was concerned about their ability to run the ball against Ohio State and it proved to be true.

+ If they could have got some momentum or points off of the takeaways in the first half that would have been huge.

+ The gap has been closed, but we’re not there yet. We’re working hard to continue to close that. “Since I’ve been here we’ve never had a fourth quarter game with them.” But close isn’t good enough, we came here to win the game.

+ “I think we’re a really good football team. To me it’s about continuing to show and prove on the field that we are one of the top programs in the Big Ten. We haven’t been that in a very long time and I think we’re closer.”

QB Michael Penix
+ It hurts. But they are going to continue to push forward and correct the things that they need to fix.

+ They got more comfortable in the second half and they executed the simple things. They all played hard for each other. They limited mistakes in the second half and started to get the result they wanted.

+ On the number of explosive plays executed in this game, Penix said they just happened as the game went on. It wasn’t something they saw on film from Ohio State,” they didn’t show too much of those, giving up the deep ball.”

+ On the interception to Shaun Wade, “it just wasn’t a good throw.”

+ They have to make the simple plays and limit mistakes. He loves what he saw today, but it hurts that they didn’t get the result they wanted.

+ They showed that Indiana football fights, they leave it all out on the field and that’s what they did. A lot of good things happened but there are things they need to correct and that’s what they’re going to do moving forward.

+ They fought back from being down at halftime but they need to finish and take advantage of opportunities given to them.

+ On the job of his offensive line, he said they work hard every day. They showed that relentless effort and he appreciates them.

WR Ty Fryfogle
+ Michael Penix is very special. He can make any throw on the field, he can do anything. “He’s a great playmaker, I just love Mike.”

+ “It’s very disappointing, we came out sloppy in the first half. This football team will be special when we put four quarters of good football together.”

+ He was moving around everywhere today and was put in good positions to make plays. “But none of that matters when you lose because it’s disappointing.”

+ This team has grown a lot and has a lot of fight in it. Most teams would lay down at the end of the first half after a score like that.

+ They studied a lot of film on the defense because of the different looks Ohio State mixes in, but at the end of the day they didn’t make enough plays.

S Jamar Johnson
+ “We fought hard and we didn’t come up with the result we wanted. But it shows the this team will fight to the end no matter what.”

+ On throwing off Justin Fields, they knew that mixing up the coverage would mix up his reads and would get to him that way. “He likes to look at one receiver, he doesn’t really go through his progressives that much. We were disguising our coverages.”

+ “The defense was heated up in the second half, we were ready.”

+ There were mistakes made in all aspects of the game.

+ The loss last year stuck with them.

+ Ohio State just made more plays than them. “Hats off to Ohio State.”

Ryan Day

+ “Really excited to be 4-0. Looking at everything we’ve been through, to be first place in the Big Ten East and to be 4-0 is great.” Most people don’t understand the sacrifices these players have made.

+ All that matters is that they win.

+ The energy they came out with was as good as he has seen.

+ “We gotta figure a way to close out games, this is the second week in a row we’ve let a team hang around.”

+ “This was not easy, really proud of this team and the coaches.”

+ On the 4th-and-1 call, they are always going to be aggressive and go for it.

+ He is not pleased, “far from pleased,” with teams being able to come back in the second half. But Day said it’s a different dynamic, playing with no fans and having to bring their own energy and playing four games when it’s almost Thanksgiving. But they have to coach better and execute better.

+ Shaun Wade’s Pick-6 was huge.

+ On the pass defense, Day said Indiana made big plays and if they didn’t give up the big plays, they probably could have had the game and run away with it. But they did give up the plays, 491 yards passing is way too much. But good news is that they stopped the run. They need to go find the issues and where the big plays are coming from and get that changed.

+ There are some things that they can look at to address this, but teams attack differently and they have to figure it out. They will look at personnel, scheme, coaching. “When you’re trying to fix something you have to look at these and that’s what Sunday’s are for. It’s not like they are not capable of doing it because they did int he first half. They just have to fill in the gaps.”

+ Justin Fields was gutsy and tough. “We knew it was going to be a high risk, high reward game.” Overall he played really gutsy and made some big time plays. They were blitzing every snap. Certainly want to have the interceptions back but you have to be aggressive, they couldn’t play on their heels. Production was good but have to clean up the turnovers.

QB Justin Fields
+ On the interceptions, Fields said on the first one he got the read wrong and it was too high, the second one he tried to throw it away, third one he just tried to do too much.

+ He obviously made bad decisions, he ended up with three picks. But he is glad they got the win. Fields said he will look at it on Sunday and get better.

+ They have to start finishing teams. He doesn’t know how it happens or why teams come back against them, but they have to start finishing teams. Coach Day talked about that in the locker room post-game.

+ On the running game, Fields said when he is not picking up the offense, other people have to pick him up. All of the running backs did a great job, they helped him a lot and helped the team a lot.

DT Tommy Togiai
+ On Michael Penix being able to still make plays with the pressure, Togiai said he has that quick release and was still able to get the ball out. Moving forward they can try to do a better job of getting there faster.

+ On teams moving the ball on them better in the second half, he said they just gave up big plays more in the second half. They need to get more pressure and get guys on the ground and tackle better. The biggest thing was the amount of big plays in the second half.

+ On this game being the Big East Showdown, Togiai said it’s hard to get a win, especially in the Big Ten. They are going to celebrate that.

+ They were able to rise to the occasion today.

+ The defense doesn’t panic. They can’t worry when the offense scores, they have to keep playing.

CB Shaun Wade
+ On giving up the big plays, Wade says that when they give up big plays they just have to move forward to the next play. Coach Kerry Coombs talks about that.

+ On his Pick-6, Wade said he knew it was coming because they ran an outside blitz.

+ On giving up big plays in the second half, Wade they have to figure it out because they can’t give up points like that. He has to go back and watch the film to see.

+ They had a couple blown coverages, but there was a couple where they just made plays. That’s a part of football, the wide receivers are going to make plays and the DB’s are going to make plays.

+ This is a championship defense and secondary. It’s not just the defense, it’s the team total in the second half that needs to do more.

RB Master Teague III
+ On his performance and the running game, Teague said they have been improving every week. He feels good about it overall but they will find nuances in the film to correct. But he feels great about it. “It’s a blessing.”

+ On getting in a groove, Teague said he did get in a good groove today and felt like he was able to make plays and help the team win. To a certain extent it is easier to be out there every time, but he’s willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win. He believes in the coaches and will be coachable. Certain situations he voices his opinion on certain runs, but it’s a team game.

+ On his 41-yard touchdown, Teague said it feels great. That’s a part of his game, a home-run hitter, but he just hadn’t been able to do it yet. He shouts out the offensive line for blocking on that play.

+ He has never been a part of a game where they blitzed that much.

LB Baron Browning
+ The pass game has some things to clean up but each week they get better and that’s what matters.

+ On sustaining energy in the fourth quarter, Browning said they have to work on that. They have to fix it if they want to be the team they know they can be.

+ On improving, they have to just keep getting better, look at the film and correct the mistakes that were made.

+ Right now they are celebrating the win, but they will take it one day at a time and correct as much as they can moving forward.

+ They knew Indiana was going to be a hard team to beat so this was a good win. They have to take it one game at a time.

That and they called one damn pick play when they ran it nearly every 3 or 4th and short and at least some of those times multiple WR's were clearly blocking. Oh and the confimed in 2 seconds incomplete pass review even Perria and the announcers wtf'd there. It probably wasn't going to be overturned but it sure as hell shouldn't be confirmed and especially not that fast.

50+ passes and not one holding call, hands to the face, or what not....

Oh, but they made sure to call a weak-ass push instead of the hands to the face that caused it.

See what happens when the OSU Ref Fund is wasted on Ped State and the balance saved for scUM?

I'm going to say that was the worst half of football I've seen OSU play for quite a while. The oline was not good in pass pro, Fields made some head-scratching decisions, the dbs looked like they were afraid the IU receivers had COVID-19 and the dline did not get regular pressure.

But let's be honest - IU is much improved and OSU *did* win the game. Those are important things to remember. That could be IU's only loss this year.

Edit to add: I'm kind of puzzled as to why IU went away from the "bomb" late in the game. OSU showed no propensity for covering it and with it a 1 score game....

I don't understand it.

The O-line has had "issues" with blitzes since the beginning of the season and I expect to see many blitzes from Illinois. The Illinois feast on turnovers so it will be critical for Fields to keep his poise and not make stupid mistakes. Perhaps now is the time for some more screens and quick short passes?

I know Fields had that problem early last year, was hoping he had advanced beyond that. Apparently not? Something he's gonna have to correct if he wants to play at the next level.

Indiana is a very good football team right now and scary for anyone to play. Penix is way more than just a" serviceable" QB!. He was phenomenal .But every time I have seen a QB have a game like that they have lost.
That is a very good point. I remember when I was in school Dave Wilson of Illinois threw for over 600 yards vs OSU. Yet OSU won.
