I'm thankful for a lot, but...

A dyin' breed.
...I'm really thankful for 8-1.

I graduated High School and a few of the kids I hung around were all Michigan fans. Of course those front-running geeks also loved the Cowboys, the Bulls, North Carolina Basketball and Atlanta Braves. I live in Las Vegas, and although I was born in Barberton and grew up in Ohio until I was 9, I've lived most of my life here in Vegas. It's a weird sports town, because everyone over the age of 35 is a transplant, but I managed to grow up with a bunch of kids born and raised in Nevada, who could really claim no allegiance to a legitimate sports region, so they cherry picked the teams they followed. Michigan was a powerhouse until the latter LLLLLLoyd years, so of course they were ripe for the picking by my douchbag high school pals. It seemed every November, I spent Thanksgiving still stinging from a defeat at the hands of those bastard up north.

Times have changed. As many of you know, after High School, everyone tends to go in opposite directions, however via Facebook I've been able to keep in touch with some of those guys over the years. I turned 30 in April, and my 20's were blessed with 8 Ohio State wins over Michigan, and all 8 courtesy of the best head football coach in the land. So via Facebook, I remember how much I was teased and made fun of after a Meatchicken victory over my beloved Bucks.

I know it's a snakepit in here after a loss, or even after a win that was a struggle with a lesser opponent. We as Ohio State fans expect the highest possible level of play, every single Saturday, and we expect a W at the end of the day. When you think about it, we're pinning the mood of our weekend on the results of a game played by a bunch of guys who aren't even old enough to drink, but are expected to succeed under immense pressure from the Coaching Staff, their professors, parents, friends, fans, and the national media, simply because they wear the scarlet and gray. There are going to be bumps in the road. We're incredibly spoiled being Ohio State fans. I don't post as much as many of you, mainly because I'm extremely busy, and I'd rather read and enjoy BP at the end of the day.

On Thanksgiving, remember how good we have it. In Las Vegas, everyone's a UNLV fan, and college football seasons are tough to get through watching the Rebels get cockstomped every Saturday. (Fortunately, the UNLV hoops squad is legit.) Ohio State fans have it good. As OSU football fans, we celebrate victory 85% of the time, and in the games we lose, we usually are treated to a nailbiter, and in defeat, our Buckeyes make us proud by fighting until the bitter end. Be thankful for the class-act Coach who takes immature, raw 18 year old kids, and turns them into men who will excel in their lives whether it be on Sundays or Mon-Fri. Be thankful that Ohio State is nationally televised every week, a testament to not only the team's success, but to a passionate fanbase that takes cable providers to task when OSU isn't on. Be thankful for tradition and notoriety, because lesser schools have none. I can't name one UNLV tradition other than the Cannon that UNLV and UNR fight over, and the tradition of bloody brawls between drunk UNLV fans and territorial Hawaii fans. Be thankful for 6 consecutive wins over Michigan. Be thankful for 3 straight classes with necklaces with 4 pairs of gold pants. It's not always going to be this good. But while it is, make sure we enjoy it, and make sure we react with sportsmanship and class when things don't go our way.

:osu:Be thankful for Ohio State.:osu:

Did one of your friends insist on being referred to as "The Rob," by any chance?

...really thankful for Dick Rod.

Before 08 I had never gotten the chance to go see my favorite team play their most hated rival. Even with my birthday being the same weekend, ticket prices were always way to much.

Then a light shone down from heaven and a man was placed in the coaching position that helped lower the level of play by those douchebags up north. Ticket prices kept falling and falling....

I will be going to "The Game" for the second time in my life today. And it's all thanks to you Dick Rod.
