I''m joining a Rugby team here locally. uh..what are the rules?

Semper Fi!
No, seriously. I have NEVER played before. It's a social competitive league, not one of those super serious leagues, but from what I have been told, still competitive nonethless, just not a super high level....hmmm although they do travel some... uh oh.

Anyway, my first practice with the guys is on Saturday... not too big a deal as I'm just kind of going to take it all in, but I need to at least know the basics. They guy that asked me said they would be happy to just get some big bodies in there, especially when some people can't make every game.

Anyone know anything about Rugby? I've already been told that it is a great group of guys...all go out drinking afterwards even w/ the other team...wow. But I guess that is the tradition all over.

I'm actually thinking of renting the rugby game for ps2 and learning some off that. Sounds dumb, but it couldn't hurt.

Thanks in advance. Oh - and I don't think I would be a speed guy either. I guess I would be more of a power player or whatever. If that helps at all. (in other words, big slow white guy!) heh.

Here's what I know about rugby:

Some of the players are called "Hookers."
Some of the players get to wear those water polo hats, because you can get your ear torn off.
The closest thing to a touchdown is called a "try."
I don't think the try counts until you're tackled, or you're down. And since the extra point is kicked from the same left-right spot on the field as where the try was scored, you try to get to the middle of the "endzone" (if that's what it's called) before getting tackled.
And I think you have to wear goofy shorts and long-sleeve collared-shirts with horizontal stripes.

-tape your ears on
-you can only throw or pitch the ball backward
-You can kick the ball forward
Besides that I don't know any rugby rules. From what I hear you have to say "Fucking Arabs" all the time while you're playing. (I wouldn't do that if I'm actually playing against Arabs)

All great stuff, folks, and most of it is accurate. BSH, just go out there and have fun. There really are rules (a lot of them), but there's no need or way to try to pick them up right away. They'll probably pair you up with an older player at your likely position (based primarily on your size and speed). Just shadow that guy and try to get a feel for it.

You'll definitely know whether it's for you or not after the first match or possibly after the first couple of practices (depending on the amount of game simulation they do). If you don't like it, you probably won't. If you do, it will get in your blood and you won't be able to get rid of it. Shoot me a pm, if you like, and I can give you more specific info.
