I'm gonna start smoking...

I figure that at least that way, I'll get a fucking filter.

I just sat at the bar with my friends and watched the game, while they sat there and smoked probably an entire carton between them. Second-hand, I probably ingested as much of that bullshit as they did.

I know that I should have expected something like that in the environment I was putting myself in. Still, is it too much to ask to be able to go out in public and not have to come home with a stuffy nose, a throat full of phlegm, a splitting headache, and clothes that smell like a chimeny?

I suspect you don't have smoking laws in Dayton? That really sucks. I love going to bars here and not stinking when I come home.

i used to smoke a little bit like alot of teenagers, and its not the shit to do. it really messes you up more than you think, it keeps you from being focused and hurts your breathing and stuff like that.

it pisses me off too when your out somewhere and your inhaling that shit like no other.

I recently quit smoking, and am glad I did, I don't miss it. That said, I feel that smokers should be able to light up in bars, and a lot of people only smoke when they drink anyway. First they go after the smokers, next they will go after restaurants that serve too much food-the do gooders never quit......

I'd rather see the market fit the demand than ban smoking in restaurants outright. People want smoke-free environments, they'll get 'em. Likewise for the smokers.

Back in the ol' waitressing days, I asked to be moved from the smoking section because although people sure did tip better there, I was starting to crave cigarettes in a big way. Dreamed about them, found myself holding my pencil like a cigarette in class... and I've never actually smoked one. Very weird...

in canada its a law that there has to be a window or wall between the non and smoking sections, just a little information right there. im not from canada but my parents have been there quite a bit and have friends up there.

That would be just like Canada to legislate it down to the nth degree. How thick do the walls need to be? Does the window need to be open or shut? I'll bet that's in the law as well.

I agree with StX (as usual), the smoking ban is a lousy way to deal with the issue. But I recently read how some places are getting around it. Apparently you can have smoking if your "primary business" is selling tobacco. How long will it be before places like that start selling "adult beverages", if they haven't already.

Yeah, but your friends are also inhaling the second hand smoke without a filter, so they're still getting more than you.

You can go out in public and avoid cigarette smoke at the same time, too. Try to avoid places like bars where people will be smoking, it's not that difficult.
Seriously though, you weren't being obnoxious, so I won't bash you for it, but I will use this opportunity for a general rant. I'm so tired of hearing people complain about the smoky smell they get from going to bars, or the people who will sit in the smoking section of a restaurant (because the table was the first one open) and then fake cough super loud whenever someone lights a cigarrette.
If you don't like smoke, don't go where the smoke is.

Here's something for you while we're on the subject (sort of) of goverment regulation where it (maybe) shouldn't be:
I got a noise violation about 3 years ago on 4th street between downtown and campus. I was listening to the radio in my old '94 Camry (all stock), and it wasn't even up all the way. I got pulled over and the cop was explaining how far away she was and could hear my music and all that, when some guy on a Harley rides by and practically blows out my eardrums. She asked if I understood and I said "no, I couldn't hear you over the exhaust of that motorcycle that just drove by." She re-explained my ticket and sent me on my way.
How in the hell can it be illegal for my car radio to be heard from 50 feet away, but not illegal for a motorcycle exhaust to rattle the fillings out of my mouth from 500 feet away?

I'm not going to preview this post, because I want to look at it in a couple days and see what it says. I had my wisdom teeth pulled the other day and I'm pretty lit up on pain medication right now. I don't even remember what this thread is about. I hope it's not about the game last night......here goes.

So your saying that because there are those of us that actually value our lungs, we should have to sit at home on the weekends?
Maybe I am misreading what you wrote since I am still mad about the game, but thats a stupid thing to say if thats how you meant it.

The free market argument is all well and good, but even in California where 80% of the population doesn't smoke, I never saw a non-smoking bar or restaurant before they passed a smoking ban. I can't recall a non-smoking airline before smoking in flight was federally banned, either.

Believe me, I'd go to a non-smoking establishment any day over one that allowed smoking, but before local and state governments put in smoking bans, I never had that choice.

I was at an outdoor concert this summer and I had a terrible experience. The show was great, but there were a ton of people smoking all over. It was as though when on person lit up, the smell of smoke would make the others start craving more and then they'd light up too. With this chain going, it was like a constant burning. I moved several times, but couldn't get away from it. Felt sick by the end of the show and saddened by the lack of consideration all of the smokers had for others, especially the younger crowd. It made me very glad that I spend most of my time in 100% smoke-free environments.
