A Murfreesboro woman wanted her new
Tennessee license plates to make a
statement about her vegetarian beliefs.
The state of Tennessee read something
else into her request.
According to a press release now
circulating from the People for the Ethical T
reament of Animals, Whitney Calk?s
request for a personalized license plate
has been rejected by the Tennessee
Department of Revenue, Taxpayer and
Vehicle Services on the grounds of
?vulgarity.?
The plate she wanted? ?ILVTOFU.?
Calk's intended message: ?I-LV-TOFU? The
woman loves her bean curd.
What the Department of Revenue
apparently read: ?I-LV-TO-F-U.? Not the
family-friendly message the state wants
rolling across its roads.
Of course, a three-second Google search
could have told Calk that her love affair
with soy products wouldn?t fare well on a
state-sanctioned vanity plate.
Tofu lovers have made multiple attempts in
recent years to obtain ILVTOFU plates.
Every time the applications were rejected ?
by Florida, by Colorado, by Virgina ? PETA
sent out press releases.
States routinely screen vanity license plate
requests for off-color language or
tastelessness. Department of Revenue
spokesman Billy Trout emailed The
Tennessean confirming that all
personalized plates are screened for
objectionable letter or number
combinations. He said applicants are
asked to submit more than one request to
avoid problems.
