Illinois center Kofi Cockburn drew attention to a racist and xenophobic comment he received following the Fighting Illini's loss to Loyola-Chicago in the 2021 NCAA men's basketball tournament.

"Go back home ya bum," an Instagram user commented (via USA Today's Chris Bumbaca). "F--king lost to Loyola. Go sit your monkey ass on the couch."

While posting a screenshot of the comment in his Instagram story, Cockburn wrote: "I blame his parents."

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg confirmed with an Illinois spokesman the university is "looking into the situation" and already identified who wrote the comment.

Illinois investigating racist post directed at Kofi Cockburn following NCAA tournament loss

Illinois big man Kofi Cockburn is the second player to say he faced racist comments on social media following a loss in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Cockburn shared on Instagram a racist social media post directed at him after the top-seeded Illini lost to No. 8 Loyola Chicago on Sunday.

Cockburn, who was born in Jamaica but later moved to New York, posted a screenshot of the post and responded by writing: "I blame his parents.''

An Illinois spokesman told ESPN's Adam Rittenberg that the school is looking into the situation and has spoken with Cockburn. The spokesman said the source of the comment was identified by others on social media.

Cockburn's post came a day after Ohio State's E.J. Liddell received threatening and insulting social media messages following the second-seeded Buckeyes' loss to No. 15 seed Oral Roberts. He posted images of the messages, including one that said, "I hope you die I really do." Other messages included racist insults.

Season prediction: For Illinois, they are fortunate to return as much talent as they do. Bringing back Cockburn and Frazier was unexpected for most, but it will help Illinois’ journey to stay at the top of the big ten and the top of the country.

Similar to Ohio State and some other teams in the conference, the Illini’s season came to an abrupt and disappointing end, being a No. 1 seed and losing in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament. Even on paper, the Illini matchup against Loyola Chicago was a bad one, but still a disappointing loss nonetheless for a team that had NCAA title hopes.

They will need to use that as fuel heading into this season with the guys that are returning. There is really no reason that this team should not be a top-15 team in the country and a top-five team in the conference as long as they play within themselves.

Illinois Star Kofi Cockburn Gets Three-Game Suspension for Selling Gear

The violation took place before NIL rules went into effect on July 1.

One of college basketball’s biggest stars will have to wait a few extra days to begin his 2021–22 campaign.

Illinois junior center Kofi Cockburn, a returning Consensus All-American and the Big Ten’s preseason Player of the Year, has been suspended by the NCAA for the first three games of the season, per an Illinois release. The suspension relates to Cockburn selling his Illini team-issue gear on a website, The Players Trunk, in June, when Cockburn was still testing the NBA draft waters and widely expected, at that point, to remain in the draft. The sales were promoted well before July 1, when new NCAA name, image and likeness legislation took effect.

Cockburn will miss home games against Jackson State and Arkansas State as well as a road game at Marquette. His first game eligible will be Nov. 22 against Cincinnati in the Hall of Fame Classic.

Terrence Shannon Jr. suspension: Illinois' leading scorer arrested, charged with rape in Kansas

Illinois star wing Terrence Shannon Jr. has been suspended indefinitely after being charged with rape, the program announced Thursday. The Douglas County (Kansas) District Attorney issued an arrest warrant for Shannon on Wednesday in connection with a Sept. 8 incident, which allegedly occurred while Shannon was attending an Illini football game against the Kansas Jayhawks.

The university specified that Shannon was "not in Lawrence on official University business, nor was he a member of the University's travel party." Shannon returned to Kansas on Thursday to turn himself in and posted bail before traveling back to Illinois. The university acknowledged that it was aware of an investigation into Shannon since late September but had not received "actionable information" until Wednesday.

"The University and DIA (Division of Intercollegiate Athletics) have shown time and again that we have zero tolerance for sexual misconduct," Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said in a statement. "At the same time, DIA policy affords student-athletes appropriate levels of due process based on the nature and severity of the allegations. We will rely on that policy and our prior experiences to manage this situation appropriately for the University and the involved parties."

The suspension is a significant blow for the Illini, who climbed to No. 11 in this week's AP Top 25 following a 97-73 win over rival Missouri last Friday. Shannon leads Illinois in scoring at 21.7 points per game, which is second only to Purdue star Zach Edey in the Big Ten.
