Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

But right now this conference needs a shot in the arm, and if JT is going to keep UM at bay, someone else is going to have to step up for the competitiveness and credibility of the conference.

I disagree completely.

None of this would be an issue if Ohio State had won at least one of their last two bowl games.

If the Buckeyes had pulled out one BCS championship none of the rest would matter. The problem isn't the Big 10, the problem is Ohio State didn't get it done on the field.

Would they be better prepared with a better b10 schedule? I'm not sure 07 is avoided, but the overconfidence heading into 06 may have been different with more dogfights instead of destroying most in their way.

Gotta Love Those Buckeyes

I got banned over on Buckeyeplanet asking why my post in a Jheranie Boyd thread that said "Illinois has a shot here" was deleted. The result, I got banned for a few days. I get back on there and in a few threads OSU fans are saying "Illinois has a shot here", some where Illinois isn't even in on the prospect (Mocking UI). It really doesn't bother me but why ban me if they're doing the same thing. And yes I understand it is their board but still. I'm not even going back over there. The only time I'll go back is when Illinois beats them or when Illinois gets either Hall or Fellows, if not both.

What are you talking about? This is the crime of the century and Darrin will expose it as any true American should.

Darrin is not a patriot! He's my leftenant. We're recruiting some speedsters in Fallujah (under the radar).

He likes the color orange. He used to be a Tibetan monk until they took him off their list (he's still reeling over that one, I think).

Viva la revolucion.

And that's the rub isn't it?

I don't really have an answer but my gut feeling is that at least one big OOC game each year and The Game go a long way to alleviate that fear. Even mediocre Big 10 teams play hard enough that it makes it physically demanding.

I'm not saying that a Big10 that consists of ten Northwesterns or Indiana's is necessarily the best thing...just that the physically & mentally tough teams from Wisconsin, hard playing but poorly coached Nits & the yearly war that is The Game are enough to season the greenest players (that's not counting the great athletes who matriculate to Illinois & MSU because they can't get in anywhere else....OR the overachieving teams that NW & Purdue occasionally throw out there).

Just because the media thinks the SEC is better than the NFC North and the Big 10 shouldn't even be Div1 doesn't mean they know what in the hell they're talking about. The head to head record between the two conferences absolutely shows that the Big 10 doesn't take a second seat to the cotton pickers.

Don't believe the hype the Big10 is fine. When Ohio State finally cleans the clocks of a couple of SECers everything will be forgotten.

IMO of course YMMV.

What's up with the Zookster? Sounds like another coach we all know and love.

Mendenhall's relationship with UI on rocky side

Days before the start of the 2007 season, running back Rashard Mendenhall said he considered quitting the Illinois football team. "I sat down and I was like, 'If this is what football is, I don't know if I want to do that anymore,' " Mendenhall said. "I'm not soft at all. I'm not scared of adversity. I don't care if somebody's yelling at me. That's not what it was about at all.

Mendenhall's current relationship with the Illinois football program can best be described as strained. You won't see him on the sidelines of Illinois games during the upcoming season. Or in future years either.

"To tell you the truth, as long as Ron Zook is there it will be hard for me to support the University of Illinois football team," Mendenhall said.

Reached Saturday afternoon, Zook said "I feel bad that he feels that way."
