Re: Someone get me excited about '10 recruiting

1. Nearly every service had Watt amongst the top OG's in the country and his offer list warranted it. But, I'm sure an internet poster with a clear bias knows he was a overrated, maxed out suburban player. It just happened to be that a player like Ty Phillips indicated that Watt was the best he had ever gone up against
2. The other players you listed (Ward, Schofield, Bulaga) are suburban players. I can not understand why you believe Lombard is overrated (aside from the fact that he is committed to ND and the others aren't) and the others are losses. Ferentz has one of the best eyes for OL talent and he offered Lombard after his freshman season. Aside from random posters and TOS pumping up Tomlinson, there is nothing from any people in the business that Tomlinson compares favorably to Lombard.
3. Of course Ward and Schofield are bigger losses than Watt. They are OTs where we are desperately thin, and Watt is an OG at a position where we have about 10 candidates. 2 different positions. The comparison back then was Feldmeyer vs. Watt
4. I don't know how you compare Goebel and Allen...two different positions. And, 2 different teams. It sounds as if you are trying to compare each's production and indicate that the unheralded Allen was a better pickup. 2 completely different situations. If Goebel was on UI and Allen was at OSU, then Goebel possibly plays extensively due to our lack of DT depth and Allen probably never sees the field because he wasn't going to beat out anyone on OSU's line. Aside from injuries, he wouldn't have played much for UI.
5. Given how often your predictions/guarantees are incorrect, you might want to stop talking in absolutes
1. Okay, once again nobody said Watt was a bad prospect. And even if Ty Phillips said he was the best he's went against, it means nothing. Watt is clearly superior in HS because he's nearly maxed out. And especially for someone like Phillips, who has never really lifted in his life. We'll see what Watt does at ND.
2. Just because someone has commited to ND. it means nothing. I don't like ND, but I'm not really biased against them. They have some great prospects coming in, and they have some on campus already. It just happens to be that most of the prospects they're getting from Illinois are overrated. I said Filer and Fleming were big losses (Although Filer may not turn out to be what everyone thought), especially Fleming. Just because nobody has Tomlinson over Lombard, it means nothing. LaKen has more upside. He has bigger growth potential, he's more athletic, and I will say he has more drive than Lombard. I've seen them both play.
3. That and the fact that I believed UI had better prospects they were recruiting than Watt (And they didn't get most BTW). I actually believe Thornton is a better prospect than Watt is. That dude has so much upside, I'm VERY glad Illinois got him because that was a big time steal.
4. Nope, Goebal wouldn't play here either. He wouldn't even sniff DT. On the OL, as bad as it was, and the fact that Goebal SHOULD be on the OL, he probably would've played, or maybe not. I don't remember exactly but wasn't he only around 270 or so last year? He's a really good guard prospect despite the fact that he can't get all that much bigger unless it's "bad weight". Jeff Allen is a way better DT and OL prospect than Goebal, though. As he trims the baby fat and gets into better shape he will be a big factor. And Jeff Allen would've played last year regardless. He is a better prospect than the more hyped Graham Pocic.
5. I can't control what happens as far as underachieving, etc. so maybe I should stop talking in absolutes as far as recruiting, or at least say something to the affect of, "Unless there is a bad season, etc.". But that's not going to keep my opinion of certain players from changing. When all these classes unfold, we'll see how everything turns out.
