Quite true. I live in Illinois, and I’ve never mentioned Famous Dave’s or any other local BBQ joint in a letter.Illinois bbq is nothing to write home about.
Illinois bbq is nothing to write home about.
I know that Chicago isn’t actually part of Illinois, but I am very fond of Hecky’s up in Evanston.
Aw man, I just looked them up and I see that Mr. Hecky Powell passed away this summer due to pneumonia/covid. Good man, good leader, good at raising up others. Salute
https://www.steamboatque.com/ Steamboat in Wheaton is outstanding. Have had plenty of Texans in town on work try it and speak very favorably. There’s some very good BBQ in Chicagoland, but you absolutely need to know where to go — and perhaps more importantly, where not to go.
No doubt. I lived in uptown Chicago for seven years, ‘84-‘91. Didn’t have too many chances for barbecue, but I liked Hecky’s the best. Had friends who grew up in the southside that swore by Robinsons. I liked it, but not as much. Chicago dining is what I miss most since moving away. I was introduced to Thai food there. Changed my life.
Chicago is famous for tavern style. Only tourists eat the deep dish. The Thai food in Chicago is outstanding. No question. You can keep the pizza tho.
