Illinois -7.5 vs NW'ern at Wrigley (ov/un 49.5) 3:30 ET, ESPNU

It was a cool idea, until they forgot to measure to see if the field would fit. Measure twice, cut once...

The Bears played lots of games at Wrigley. The Cardinals (Chicago - St. Louis - Phoenix) used Comisky Field. In fact the Bears won more than one NFL Championship game at Wrigley. Briggs Field (listed here as Detroit Stadium), Polo Grounds, Griffith Stadium. Yankee Stadium were also used by NFL teams. Blessed are those of us who can remember players having to deal with pitcher's mound at Municipal stadium until the Indian's season was over and the Browns permitted to remove it.

I know I'm old and mean..hell play the game the way it was..practice both teams there and walk through..when the Bears played there the field ran the other way and there was a Nine yard endzone..no one died there. The game of football is a dangerous and violent game..players will be hurt and suffer debilatating injuries. Instead of trying to make it perfectly safe highlight the very high risks and then let parents and adults decide if they want to assume those risks. The Game will lose its popularity if its two hand touch. In our PC world we try somehow to assure people we can live in a risk free world. Football is violent..people die..in ILL we routinely argue over helmet laws for motorcyclists..we dont have any because the rider takes the risk himself they want their freedom. What is worse is downplaying the risks and highlighting safety..gives people the allusion that football is safe..

Didn't the adults in this case the coaches mutually decide not to take the risks?

The wall was too close, what the bears did in the 70s is whatever..they did a lot of things back then that they wouldn't do today. I mean a 9 yard end zone? Come on. The way that football is played today made the wall unacceptable, it's against NCAA rules even to have the wall that close

This is all before $200 million lawsuits. Happy things went fine in this game, but it's not the way it used to be. Good or bad, that stadium was not meant for football. Love the history though...Seriously, love it. Back when we weren't pussies...

But the real fact is that if you had to be making accommodations such as the ones made then you had no business playing the game there. This game had bowl implications for both teams and for the conference and to turn it into a gimmick game was a crime.

Who cares....it's Northwestern without the QB that got them there against Zook. if the field wasn't the problem, that certainly would have been...

Well, I think that's why a lot of people question the Big Ten+2 for having it there. Awesome idea, but if the field doesn't fit and it may actually be dangerous to run into the one endzone, why have it there to begin with...

The one goalpost wasn't a goal post at all. They bolted half a goal post to the wall! It didn't even look like it was at the endzone end line, but a foot or so inside the end line. Again, I love the idea, but if you can't pull it off, do Soldier Field or something that still gives you the gimmick...Just my imo. Definitely want to take advantage of Chicago, what a great city...

Northwestern wants to play another football game at Wrigley

Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips, who told the Tribune on Monday that there is ?absolutely potential to do another. This was a wonderful event, it captured a national audience and from the responses I?ve received, there truly was a bowl-like atmosphere.? OK, but what about the field? Shrink-wrapping won?t do the trick. ?I don?t know,? Phillips replied. ?Maybe you could take off some seats down the third-base line or shift the field a little more toward the home dugout.? Cubs President Crane Kenney was in meetings Monday and unavailable to comment, but it?s believed the Cubs would like to make Wrigley football-friendly during the team?s proposed renovation.

could you imagine the nflpa allowing a mound to be in place for a game today? no way. none. granted i think football is a better for not having the turf monster, a la the vet in philly, jump up and bite guys and end careers.

both of these tend to jive together, shrink the endzones a bit, or hell play on a 98 yard field.

all that being said after seeing the field in game action one most wonder who the hecks idea it was. how that field was not staked out and measured is beyond me... note good life experience, if you are going to buy a lot and have a floor plan design, stake out the perimeter of the house...

granted, then again i think wrigley could gain from modifications in the upcoming renovation to make this happen again. as noted before some of the now permanent box seats used to be temporary.
