"Rock" pioneer? Not fucking hardly. "Soul" and "funk" pioneer, absolutely. "Thank you for letting me by mice elf" was one of the first, if not thei first, major records to use "slap" bass. But saying Turner was a rock pioneer is like saying "Aerosmith" is a rap prioneer.

Ike is in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame.

Also, from that article: "In 1951, Mr. Turner played piano, wrote, arranged and produced the song "Rocket 88," which is widely regarded as the first rock 'n' roll record, although it was not recorded under his name."

So are a lot of soul, R&B, and Motown performers, such as Muddy Waters, Smokey Robinson, B. B. King, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Otis Redding, Louis Armstrong, etc.

While that may be true, listen to his vast majority of work and it's not "rock and roll" but rather "soul". To me, "pioneer" means someone who not only starts/discovers something, but continues to lead throughout the genre...
