If USC wins the Rose Bowl...Can they do the impossible?

Uh, as usual, you're wrong. Per Rivals:

2005: USC #1 (OU #3) USC also had 7 fewer commits than OU
2004: USC #1 (OU #9) USC had 3 more commits, but a far higher star average
2003: USC #3 (OU #4)

USC also has the highest current star-average, so once they get their full compliment of recruits they will be in the top three easily, and very possibly #1 for the third year in a row...I'd say that's reloading.

Plus, we saw how well those OU classes panned out (35-7 ass-beating by Kansas State, 55-19 ass-raping by USC, season collapse this year), while those USC classes have proved their worth (37-1 over last three years).

You're way off the mark comparing USC and Oklahoma.

I didn't say OU = USC. I merely stated that the scenario was very similar.

USC had Leinart/Bush/White in 03, 04 & 05. Carroll is an amazing coach, and there were plenty of other great players that were on those teams, but that is a central cog to their success. I do not expect them to lose more than 1-2 games next year... however they should not go undefeated again.

OK, genius, here are the Scout rankings:

2005: USC #6, OU #5 but USC had 10 fewer commits (16 vs 26) and had an average star rating of 3/4 star over OU
2004: USC #1, OU #7
2003: USC #1, OU #3

Anyone who thinks that USC won't simply reload is a moron. Now, will that certainly mean that they will run the table again next year? Of course not. However, the chance of them running the regular season table next year still is very, very good. If USC does beat Texas, Oklahoma's 47-game win streak will be in serious jeopardy.

Rebuilding? No. Reloading? Yes. In their reloading year next year I feel fairly certain they will lose 2 games. Without Reggie Bush, they lose to at least Fresno State this year. Booty or Sanchez will be a HUGE step down from Leinart, probably the best QB in CFB history. Give them next year to jell, and they'll be right back in '07. However, if they do beat Texas, it wouldn't matter if they had friggin' Gary Coleman moving into start at QB next year, that record and how dominate they are going to be in 2006 is all we will hear about all summer. As I'm typing this they are previewing the Memphis-Akron game halftime show...anybody wanna guess who they said they are going to talk about?

I guess I'm in that small minority of people outside of the Lone Star state who think that USC won't win the Rose Bowl. :wink:

If they do, it's kind of hard to say that they'll get the record. Palmer, Mike Williams, Leinart, and Bush are all pretty special players, and it
s been a good run for SC to have those guys. Certainly, they've got recruits who *can* step up, but as Fred Davis shows, not all five star guys translate into becoming one of the best all time at their position (or even at becoming starters). They'd have as good of a shot as you could ask for, though.

Agreed.

USC has plenty of talent, that is a given. They are going to lose 3 possible top 15 picks this year. You don't simply reload that caliber of player, there will be some transition. Reggie Bush cannot simply be replaced by inputting in another player. Leinart and all his experience cannot simply be replaced. Same goes for Lendale White. Yeah, they do still have an embarassment of talent, but that doesn't mean that they'll run the table. The only thing they have going for them is their weak schedule, though there are some early season potholes awaiting them.

In all honesty I think this conversation will be a moot one because the Horns are going to win that game next week.

The only real tests USC has all year is at Arkansas and at Arizona. It is quite conceivable that they lose two games next year...but, with a little luck they can just as conceivably run the table.

I think Texas will upset them in the Rose Bowl, but if they don't USC has a very realistic chance at Oklahoma's record.

I'm not betting against USC. Yes, they have talent, but you don't do what they've done without having great people around the program and like him or not if he stays around in college football Pete Carroll will be known as the greatest coach to ever coach in college football.

I'm not so sure. There's no way that any team can maintain the level of recruiting and success over a sustained period of time. If he stays at USC for 20 years, he may rank rank up among the best, but unless he wins about 7 national titles, he won't be considered the best.
