I am slowly getting over the flu, which ran through our house this weekend. I was the last one to get it and fortunately did not have it as bad as my older son who had it first. I spent the day at home yesterday and never strayed too far from the bathroom.

It has been a while since I have been that sick and I forgot how the flu can knock you down. I randomly would just lay down as I tried to make my way through the house. As soon as I stopped I would fall asleep. I woke up in the bathroom, in the upstairs hallway and on a couch.

Right now I am just drinking Gatorade to try and keep everything settled. Of course, someone wandered in my office this morning with a big old bag of jerky offering me some. She had no idea I was out sick yesterday. The sight of it almost had me doing the bathroom sprint.

The flu is nasty stuff. My mother was taken via emergency squad to the hospital a few months ago because of the flu. She was so dehydrated from getting sick that she couldn't even walk.

I have never gotten a flu shot, and the first time I've ever really gotten the flu was last year. Maybe I should think about getting one every year from now on.

And I thought this was a thread on chimney's....

Seriously - I have deduced me getting sick down to two things - stress and sleep. If I get too much of the first and not enough of the second, I get sick - like clockwork. I could be taking vit C intervenously, it wouldnt matter. That said, under normal condition I think diet and vitamins do help.

It's a fact that once you have kids you are guaranteed to get sick several times a year... they're like germ magnets

Yep. This is where it came from. Daycare told us yesterday that every family had the flu over the weekend. At least we know where it came from.

Stress and lack of sleep will get me a cold, but kids are kind enough to share the flu. My cold fighter is lots of OJ with extra Vitamin C, Cold Eeze and Alka Seltzer Cold Nighttime.

Also, I have had a flu shot once in my life and I still ended up with the flu. I believe the shots only cover 30% of the anticipated strains for that flu season. It is not a guarantee flu protector some people think it is.

And s little Echinecea (sp?) this stuff works

No it doesn't, nothing more than a placebo. Trust me, I took it up until last year.

They did a study on it and showed that taking Echinacea has no affect on your immune system.

I take a multi-vitamin every moring and like NYB said, make sure to get enough sleep, that is crucial.

A final thing I've found that makes a HUGE difference is making sure you have some kind of humidifying device in your house in the winter time.

You are much more likely to get illnesses in the winter because your sinuses dry out making them more receptive to infection.

I just recently installed a whole-home humidifying system on my furnace and already notice a difference.
