I Hate Cedric Benson (Updated signs 5 year deal)

I know there are more Bears fans then just me here. I can't believe it wasn't until recently I've read all of this stuff on him. By the time its all said and done I'll be happy if he is the same amount of distraction Ricky is, because I could see him being worse.... I don't even want him to sign. Thomas Jones and Adrian Peterson are good enough...

Cedric Benson,
by Steven Skaggs at 12:28AM (CDT) on April 24, 2005 |

Since the NFL draft has me in a football frame of mind (although I must confess, I am still pumped about the Sox extra-innings win in Kansas City Saturday night), here are a few NFL items.

*I'm probably being paranoid, but does anyone else have the feeling that Bears draftee Cedric Benson may be troubled, hypersensitive, and have difficulty dealing with the media (not unlike another dreadlocked former collegiate superstar running back from Texas)? Here are some things to consider (read every word of each article before making a judgment):

*From Bill Frisbee of InsideTexas.com: Benson told ESPN that certain NFL coaches and scouts attempted to "degrade me" and "manipulate me" during the past few months before adding, "I thought the (NFL scouting) process was a big slap in the face for everything that I've done and the way I've carried myself. There's no respect for what you've done, but obviously the Bears believe in me and we're going to get some things done in Chicago."

*From Stewart Doreen of the Midland Reporter Telegram: Benson has idolized [Ricky] Williams from afar since his early football days at Abell Junior High. In fact, Benson's long dreadlocks that he sported during his college days were inspired by Ricky.

"I idolized Ricky Williams for what he did on the field. I don't endorse anything he has done beyond that," Benson said. "It was time for the hair to go. It's now time to put kiddie things behind me and move on. It's all business now and time to get serious.

"But don't get me wrong. I still think the hair was cool. I still like the dreads and I have them in my bathroom. I still go by and look at them every once in a while."

*From Rick Morrissey of the Tribune: Benson is a workhorse as a running back, but he also was the guy who kicked down a door, trying to retrieve a plasma TV someone allegedly had stolen from him. He's the guy who was arrested for possession of marijuana and the guy who saw those charges dropped. He's the guy who last year said that he would rather win the Heisman Trophy than beat Oklahoma, Texas' archrival.

*From Bill Wolverton of the Rockford Register Star: Bears director of college scouting Greg Gabriel called the character issue overblown, a monster created by the media. But if it was created by the media, why did Benson say NFL personnel people treated him "Like I had murdered somebody or something." CHARACTER IS an issue in the NFL, especially when you hand over millions of dollars to a guy who seemed to have trouble dealing with a $250,000 signing bonus from the L.A. Dodgers, a team he later quit on.

...ESPN The Magazine ran a story where Benson said the reason he sat alone on the bench and watched walk-ons and scout-team players celebrate a Rose Bowl win over Michigan wasn't to bask in the joy of others: "It amused me to see them get so excited like that because they really didn't do anything."

Everything in Benson's past suggests he's an odd young man with questionable judgment.

*From David Haugh of the Tribune: Asked about the quality of that character during a bizarre, combative teleconference minutes after the Bears drafted him, Benson bristled. The first stiff-arm of his Bears career would be to the Chicago media.

"Quality character, what is quality character?" he asked.

A reporter replied that it described someone who would not get arrested or cause problems.

"I'm not a kid, I'm not a troublemaker, I don't like to run in the streets, I'm not 12," Benson said. "I'm an adult now, I'm in an adult business and I have to carry myself like that. I understand that. That's what I do. I don't want to embarrass myself or my family or my organization."

Curious as to what he thinks of the UT fans who did nothing to help on the feild.

Ironic. He didn't do much of anything that game, either.

Nice one.

I'm a huge Bears fan, and I am definitely in the "Benson is a fucktowel" camp. It was evident on draft day: a lot of people around here wanted to buy into the "he was crying, he was so happy to be drafted" crap, but I knew when I heard that interview where he was taling about being "dissed" by basically everyone imaginable that we were in trouble. He brought his baseball agent to come meet with the Bears brass this week...as he was putting his house and property here up for sale...no mixed signals there.

All that said, after watching the Bears tonight, there are 3 conclusions to draw:

-They have a top 5 defense,

-They don't need Benson...RB is the least of their worries

-Chad Hutchinson and I have something in common...no way in hell should either one of use be playing QB in the NFL. I understand why they let CK go, but "Hutch" has looked worse than CK everytime he's taken the field. But of course, he's the "annointed" starter, so no matter what Orton does (like lead TD drives), the Bears will lose with Hutch. Perfect.

I have quite a few thoughts on the situation. First, this whole thing sucks, I don't know if it is the Bears being bitches or Cedric but it needs to end...soon. Yall are acting like the Bears aren't the cheapest organization this side of arizona. They do not have a steller reputation and I am not willing to say that this is not their fault. Buck Wrestler put up all of these pretty quotes for us but many of them are taken out of context and really aren't bad. For example,

This quote makes it sound like he was being made out to be a drug dealer. The fact is that Cedric couldn't believe that people were so worried about him becomming the next Ricky Williams just because they had the same haircut.

Benson is a workhorse as a running back, but he also was the guy who kicked down a door, trying to retrieve a plasma TV someone allegedly had stolen from him. He's the guy who was arrested for possession of marijuana and the guy who saw those charges dropped
He may not have gone about it the right way, but If someone stole my plasma TV when I was 19, I would have been kicking down a door too. As for the Marijuana, well i'm sure it was his, but lets be honest, marijuana is a non issue in the nfl. It gets looked over every day. Just ask your own Robert Smith.

With the way that Edgerin James and Shawn Alexander have been treated in Free agency, I can understand why Ced would believe that he needs to get his best contract now. There is no "big" pay day for runningbacks anymore. After your first contract is up, you are on the downside of your career.

Also, incase you think that im nuts for calling out the bears, I'll show you I'm not the only one, Even Chicago's own Jay Marriotti is on his side.

Why fans would be interested in protecting the McCaskey finances -- after 20 years of ripping the family as cheap -- is beyond me. And don't advance the company line and tell me an extra million dramatically alters the salary cap, especially when the Bears hit and miss so wildly in free agency. Sometimes, a team has to bite the bullet, especially when a player so urgently matches the need.
Unfortunately, business egos are in the way, which again makes me wonder if the Bears -- like all Chicago teams -- are more concerned about the bottom line than their lowly standing in the league. I'd have no problem with their stance if they were a Super Bowl contender with a fine quarterback and a purring offense. But last season, they had the league's worst offense. And without a credible QB, they need a solid running game to have any hope of avoiding the same rut. Thomas Jones, who was dismissed as obsolete after Benson was drafted, can't carry the offense. He'll be smothered, if not knocked out with an injury, and the Bears will lose a lot of 13-10 games.
Whether the Bears get it or not, they'll be the embarrassed party if Benson doesn't sign. Once again, they would have failed to maximize their futility like no other franchise in sports. When other teams stink, they take advantage of their lowly status with intelligent choices high in the draft. The Bears? They take Enis at No. 5. They take David Terrell at No. 8. They trade down and take Cade McNown instead of Daunte Culpepper.
Go ahead and take issue with his personality, if you'd like, but the Bears were confident enough to draft him. Once again, no matter how much the bosses protest, this is Halas Hall's blunder
I don't know who is at fault here because, like most/all of you I do not have all the information. It is, however, amazing to me that we are all so quick to blame the player. Managment is not squeeky clean either.

Actually, I'm quite thoroughly indifferent on the negociations. Guys hold out; teams cut them. It's just business.

What stood out to me is this:
Cedric Benson said:

Frankly, he's an asshole. I respected Benson a lot before I read that, but now I hope he washes out of the NFL. Fuck him.

HL, I don't care about the holdout that much, or the marijuana issues. But when a guy mocks his own teammates for getting excited over being on a rose bowl champs team, that is a huge character flaw. It's even more absurd b/c (as already pointed out) he really didn't help you guys win that game at all.
