I have some questions about running the I Formation.

In light of our new found emphasis on running the I-Formation. Does the I make for easier QB reads?

Does the I-Formation force defenses out of the soft zone we've been seeing?

How big a factor is Tight End play in the I ?
 
i doubt the reads are any easier considering he has less time to setup. the soft zone would probably really differ from time to time plus on how good we are doing with different formations such as twins trips etc. i would think the tight end would see a little more action because he would be more of a go to target. one thing that pleased me the most saturday agianst msu was the play where smith had nobody open so he dumped it off to pittman for a good gain. where has that been? why cant we pass to pittman more and have him as a go to guy?

I-Formation only refers to the backs. You are referring to a pro-set with one TE, a flanker, and a SE. Yes, that is easier to read than the spread, multiple (2+) WR sets. I-Formation can be anything from trips over to double TE.

If anything, I would say the drop steps help Troy more than anything.

i agree 100%, this will force troy to stay in the book for 2-4 seconds min. if he goes through his complete 3,5,7 step drop

as far as what actually happens a lot of that is based on what you do. i would say if you are not familar with it download the 1995 ill, or is it und game i think is on here somewhere (dont ask me how the full game downloads work i have no idea) seeing things used is much simpler for the casual fan

osugoose posted the 95 ill game twice. Here (4.4GB) and here (7.4GB). Bit torrent instructions are linked in my signature.

The full game downloads aren't hard :tongue2: Most people just need to install Azureus and click a link! If you want help, PM me and I can walk ya through it.

I think it also makes his mobility much more useful. He is able to get back quickly, and so a combined QB draw could give the DE's a little more time to overpursue before he heads up field. The kid has wheels and great moves in the open field, but seems terrified to run. He looked a little more comfortable scrambling on plays where he dropped back, felt the pressure and stepped up to run. That is the old Troy that we love. The PSU troy wasn't even comfortable scrambling, let alone throwing.

I posted last week in the thread about offensive struggles (not sure which there were so many) that they should use more I formations. IMO the I makes it easier for the QB on reads. Instead of reading multiple guys in the secondary you simplify it to 1 or 2 depending on what play you run.

I also like the I in that if you establish a good running game you make the D commit to it and you get more 1on1 matchups with the speedy receivers. Plus it uses the tight ends a bit more. Cover 2 with a TE splitting the safeties.(gives me goosebumps thinking about it)

I've been waiting on a more simplified offense all year. I'm ready for the 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense from the good old days. :)

In his press conference today, Tress says formations are dependent on who their playing and we probably won't run the I-formation 50% of the time!

Now, I'm really confused! :2004:
Or maybe he just doesn't want to tip his hand?

i still say we need pittman as a last resort guy. yeah i know most of the time he is blocking but if he can get out anywhere and get the ball he gets yards everytime and it doesnt end up being a play out of complete desperation that leaves us back against our seats. when pittman caught that pass saturday i about creamed my pants in joy that we finally got him the ball through the ball when the secondary had us covered down field. the NFL systems brought to the college game have worked wonders for talented teams(USC, ND)
