Watching the bowl games so far, especially Clemson and Kentucky, I am realizing just how spoiled we as Buckeye fans are! The special teams plays by these teams and others are pathetic! Deep kicks and made FG and good punting aren't even a concern of mine while watching the BUCKS. Fans of these other teams must hold their breath everytime special teams gather around their coach on the sideline. Just wanted to get that out.

GO BUCKS!

:oh: :io:

I was thinking the same thing as I was watching that game. It is amazing that other teams are not copying the JT formula. You take it for granted when you watch Ohio State every weekend. It is really not something us OSU fans have had to worry about. Then you watch Clemson and you realize just how lucky we are. Solid special teams are really underrated. We are very fortunate.
Go Bucks!

It's harder than just copying JT's formula. You actually have to have talent at those positions. He just doesn't take some guy and turn him into a great punter or kicker. Look at Nuge, he was automatic in HS before he even got to OSU. I agree though, we are spoiled.

Forgive my horrible memory. When did we fuck up punts/extra points. Specific examples please. (seriously, i can't recall any off the top of my head, sorry)
First TD, 2005 in ann arbor. xp shanked wide left.

Late in the game, 2005, home vs. Illinois. xp botched, Illinois returns for their only 2 points of the game.

Last punt I can remember being partially blocked was in 2002, home against Minnesota. Groom punting out of the North endzone and the ball was tipped but not blocked.

Pettrey shanked against Indiana (though it's telling that the announcer says "45-3" and then "no! he missed!" incredulously)
We also had one blocked against Minny.
Finally 1 blocked, and 1 bad snap against Northwestern. (Griese had a field day... "that'll be huge against ttun next week." I'm so glad Herbie isn't overtly pro-OSU on national television)

It's tough to coach the ST, because for virtually all of the non-kickers, it's a secondary position for them. You've got limited time to practice, and may only play your special teams slot a handful of times per game, if that. I'm more surprised to see coaches like Tressel and Beamer be as successful as they are, rather than be surprised by mediocre ST play. Clearly, part of what they're doing is devoting a higher percentage of practice time to ST, and/or having the backup players who are on ST putting more of their focus towards it.
