Hypothetical: Drop a team from your conference!

BigWoof31

"Barkin' up the wrong tree"
With so much back and forth about conference expansion, adding new teams, expanding new media markets and upping television contracts - it seems like every possible scenario has been played out and discussed over and over.

Except of course for this one - dropping a team from your conference! Speaking from a purely fictional scenario - if the Big 10 had to drop a team rather than add a team (creating an east/west conference) who would you drop? Why would you drop them? And what would the divisions look like with only 10 teams?

From an outsider perspective - I never really understood what your conference saw in Minnesota?

Middle of the road (or lower) in football (and they don't draw huge crowds)
Middle of the road (sometimes higher) in basketball

Is it simply a tradition "thing?" They are the annoying cousin you can't get rid of since they've been around so long?

There's a lot of history there. Minne won a few NCs back in the 30s IIRC. They're an original member.

And to answer your original question, I believe that "Go back to 10 teams" or something to that effect has been a tag for quite some time in the Big Ten Expansion thread. Several times it has been opined in that thread that we should do just that. Usually, the feat is accomplished (theoretically) by dropping Penn State. I even suggested dropping Penn State while adding several other teams.

If ya gotta drop somebody; it's gotta be PSU

Northwestern or Purdue...

now... having said that, I mean, I don't really want to kick anyone out...

But, really, Indiana and Minnesota are investing in their programs heavily the last few years (or at least some)... Iowa shells out cash for Ferentz if noting else... not sure what MSU is doing monetarily, but, seem to be headed in the right direction.

Obviously Ohio State, Penn State invest heavily... as has Wisconsin.

Just to explain my rationale...

And of course this has changed now that the BTN revenues are in play... but... one of the problems I've always had with the big ten was the welfare nature of certain of the practices (even distribution of bowl income, etc) and the fact that some programs have become free riders.

Need to look no further than SEC coach salaries to find an obvious difference between the philosophy of the midlevel schools in each conference.

Point is, Ohio State is investing... other schools do not. Fuck them.

Anyway, been a while since I really looked at this, but, Michigan was outperforming their investment for a long time. Generally this has now caught up with them, honestly... not just football.

Edit-- If Purdue or NW just announced plans to shell out 20 mill for facilities or something, then, jsut change the argument to "free riders"-- but, face it... Danny Hope wasn't exactly a "search for the next Pop Warner"

I'm torn. I don't want Penn State to go to the Big East and start winning a bunch of games. But, I also think it would be hilarious to see them get demoted....and of course they would lose out on a ton of money.
