Explorers coach says 4-2 team has to win its last four games in order to make postseason

Coach Tom Narducci believes his Hudson football team is modeled after the cast of a popular spaghetti western from 1966.
``It's The Good, The Bad and The Ugly all over again,'' said Narducci, referring to a movie that helped catapult Clint Eastwood to stardom. ``We have won good, won bad and won ugly. We have lost good, lost bad and lost ugly.
``We have run the gamut and there are still four weeks to go.''
The Explorers have a 4-2 overall record and are 1-2 in the Western Reserve Conference headed to a pivotal WRC game at home tonight against Mayfield (4-2, 2-1).
Hudson opened 3-0 with victories over Federal League powers Jackson and GlenOak, with a triumph over Painesville Riverside in between. That caught the attention of the Ohio media, and the Explorers garnered the No. 8 position in Division I in the first Associated Press state poll.
Then came losses to Solon (6-0, 3-0) and Brush (5-1, 3-0) to open WRC play, before Hudson gained a conference victory last weekend over winless Cuyahoga Falls.
The club's inconsistency can be expected since the Explorers start four sophomores on defense and have been rotating inexperienced quarterbacks Sean Fertick, a junior, and Alex Gedeon, a sophomore.
``We got beat by two really good teams,'' Narducci said. ``We have struggled at times on offense, but we haven't pushed the panic button yet.
We have to stay with what we are doing and tweak things a little.''
Catching Solon in the WRC is a long shot, but Narducci believes his team can finish with wins over Mayfield, Twinsburg, Stow and Nordonia to reach the playoffs for the fourth season in a row.
``The league title is not a realistic goal, but the state playoffs are,'' Narducci said. ``We have to win out.''
Hudson has been ground-oriented on offense, with senior fullback Steve Faul and tailback Matt Hooper getting most of the carries and yards. The offensive line has been led by Billy Nagy, one of the state's most highly recruited linemen, and Joe Berdine. The primary receiving weapon is tight end Tim Eagan.
On defense, Nagy and Berdine have been forces up front, and Ryan Stump has emerged in recent weeks at linebacker.
The Explorers' push to the playoffs starts tonight against a physical Mayfield team that counts Stow and Nordonia among its victims.
``We have had some close games with them through the years,'' Narducci said. ``They have tough, blue-collar kids who like to hit.''

HUDSON - Hudson dominated visiting Stow in all phases, easing to a 38-13 Homecoming victory in Friday night's Western Reserve Conference matchup at Lavelli Field.
Senior Steve Faul recorded 200 yards on offense -- 106 rushing and 94 receiving -- including two crucial long runs to set up first-half touchdowns.
On Hudson's first drive of the night, Faul raced 49 yards down the right sideline to the Stow 17. Junior quarterback Sean Fertick capped the drive when he rolled left, and ran down the sideline 23 yards.
Faul struck again for Hudson early in the second quarter, this time turning what seemed like a negative-yardage play into a 38-yard run down to the Stow 5.
Junior fullback Matt Hooper then scored on a 1-yard run.
``On both of my long runs, everyone just did their assignments, and the play opened up,'' Faul said. ``On the second run, I was running left, but it was bottled up, so I cut it back and just found the seam.''
Stow (2-7, 1-5) sophomore quarterback Alex Loftin capped a 62-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Bradley Ziegler on a perfectly thrown fade route to cut Stow's deficit to 14-6.
Hudson (7-2, 4-2) then broke the game open. After Hudson senior Greg Eisenhardt's 66-yard punt pinned Stow on its 8, the Explorers' defense forced a short Stow punt that gave Hudson the ball at the Stow 23.
Sophomore quarterback Alex Gedeon found senior tight end Tim Eagan three plays later for a leaping 13-yard touchdown strike to put Hudson up 21-6.
``We've had so many injuries lately,'' Eagan said, ``so we put in a few new plays this week, and that was one of them. I ran a post to the back side, and he just threw it where I could get it.''
Hudson's defense gave Stow fits, intercepting three passes and limiting Stow to 191 yards.
Senior linebacker Ryan Stump and senior defensive tackle Bill Nagy led the Explorers up front, while sophomore defensive back Ryan Jones came up with a sack, an interception, and the biggest hit of the night -- a devastating highlight-reel shot to the quarterback along the sideline.
``We were fired up from the beginning,'' Jones said, ``and the intensity was there. Everyone did their job, so good things happened.''
Hudson at Nordonia
What, when, where: Western Reserve Conference game, 7:30 p.m., Boliantz Stadium, 8006 S. Bedford Road, Macedonia. Call 330-908-6001.
Records: Hudson 7-2, 4-2; Nordonia 5-4, 4-2.
What to watch: The winner earns a share of second place in the league but should be able to make postseason plans. Nordonia has overcome a sluggish start by winning four of its last five games - including a 42-14 thrashing of Brush last week - to pull into playoff contention in Division II. Hudson's season has been one of streaks. The Explorers, seeking a fourth straight playoff appearance, began the season with three straight wins. Then came consecutive losses to Brush and Solon, followed by four straight victories. Sixth in Region 2 of the Division I poll, the Explorers probably need to win in order to reach the postseason. There is no probably for the Knights. A win is all that works.
