HTTP 400 - Bad Request

Ok, need some help so I can surf BP easier.

My work just upgraded my computer. Migrated my old harddrive to a new computer and everything. I have a feeling this is the cause of this problem.

While surfing BP, whenever I make a post or click the button for the new posts of a thread I get a HTTP 400 - Bad Request screen, This Page cannot be found.

It is starting to piss me off, I assume they set something in my internet options that does this to me. But I have no clue what option that needs to be enabled or disabled. So I am asking the smart tech guys here to help a fellow BP'er out.

The HTTP 400 - Bad Request error from the server indicates that it couldn't understand the syntax you sent it when requesting a Web page.

The first thing you might want to try is browsing some other sites which require input text, such as doing some searches at sites like Amazon, eBay, CNN, and regular search engines like Google or Yahoo! Also try some sites which IT departments will commonly block for being notorious resource/time wasters, like YouTube, Facebook, and Flickr.

If it's specific to your PC, you could try downloading another Web browser for your PC, running a portable browser from a USB stick, checking your Internet connection settings and seeing if your IT dept has you running through a proxy server, or temporarily disabling your antivirus/firewall software.

Most likely, something else on your PC is filtering your Web requests, which usually points to a built-in firewall/AV app that is rewriting the URLs.

Maybe you need to be nicer when you request next time.

I would try a different browser first - try Firefox 3.5 if you haven't already.

Is the machine locked down or can you make any changes?

pretty please with sugar on top?

Unfortunately I am stuck with IE 6.0 since this is my work computer. I wish I could grab firefox.

Yep, the normal firewall setup is blocking the usual sites, no youtube, facebook, twitter and such. The government/military firewall I am behind blocks a ton of websites. Luckily BP is one of the few message board websites I even have access too. Also a reason I really can't go to my IT department or else they will block BP alltogether. :(

I did double check some other websites that I do have access to like Amazon, Yahoo & Google and was able to do searches and such. But was not able to duplicate the Bad Request error.

So far it only happens when I click the flag to go to the unread posts and also right after I post a message (instead of being re-reouted to the post I just made). But as long as I click on just the thread I can read the thread, it just becomes a pain when there are 3-4 new pages of posts to read through.

I also realized you guys probably need some additional info. Like I said IE 6.0 and my system is Windows NT. Looking at my internet options toolbar the Java Console enabled & Java logging enabled are not checked, while JIT compiler is checked. Also the general Java sun using JRE 1.5.0_13 is checked (no clue if that even helps or not but if you need more info, I will grab it)

Also, my guess is this is specific to my PC, as my old computer did not get the Bad Request, as of Monday when I last had access to it. But I'll see if I can sneak over and use someone else's computer to double check that.

Links to unread posts and posts you make contain hash signs (#) specifying the post number.

Do you get a 400 error if you click this link?

Introduction to HTML 4

That link worked for me.

I also just checked on another computer and did not get an error message, so just my cpu isn't working (but that was an older model like my old computer, will try to 'borrow' someone's cpu that is a similar model to my new one)

Strange. I can't figure out why a permalink would be structured differently from a link to an unread post or the redirect back to your own posts.

*scratches head*

I know... its a weird one. As I like to think of myself as somewhat computer savvy.

But I come across another issue with my new computer that I can bug my IT with. Cuz we have some web browser based systems we use. Before they would open up into their own window. But now they seem to open up into a web browser that is already open. Which is kinda of a pain cuz we have 2 such systems and they seem to want to open up in each other's browser meaning I can't use both of them at the same time, which I need to do. Freaking government computers

Well, that 2nd issue just got fixed by my IT (The reuse windows for launching shortcuts was checked). I was really hoping that would solve my BP issue too...

But it didn't :sob:

Oh, for s & giggles I copied the web address that gave me the bad request thing.
