Holding steady: For the second consecutive week, there's minimal movement in the rankings. No. 21 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), whose only loss was by 14-7 to No. 3 Mission Viejo, debuts after winning six of its first seven games. The postseason begins this weekend in western Pennsylvania and for most of the Midwest.
Player of the week: WR Mohamed Massaquoi caught 10 passes for 230 yards and five TDs as No. 2 Independence (Charlotte) won its 70th consecutive game, beating Central Cabarrus (Concord) 63-13. Massaquoi, who says he'll attend Georgia, scored on catches of 20, 32, 45, 20 and 7 yards.
Game of the week: Friday, Henninger (Syracuse, N.Y.) vs. No. 20 Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse), 8 p.m. ET in Class AA, Section 3 semifinals at Cicero (N.Y.)-North Syracuse High. Henninger beat CBA 22-14 in last year's semifinals.
Milestone: Preseason Super 25 RB Toney Baker of Ragsdale (Jamestown, N.C.) became North Carolina's career rushing leader, rushing for 284 yards and four TDs vs. Asheboro. Baker has 9,285 career yards. He surpassed the previous mark of 9,038 yards, set by T.A. McLendon of Albemarle from 1998-2001.
Extra points: QB Matt Johnson of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) High passed for a state-record 534 yards and six TDs on 26 completions in a 48-45 win over Flanagan (Pembroke Pines). ... Bruce Williams of No. 20 Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse, N.Y.) became New York state's career reception leader with 182. Williams made 12 catches for 150 yards vs. Central Square (N.Y.) in the Class AA sectional playoffs. ... Eden Prairie (Minn.), No. 9 in the Midwest, clinched its eighth Lake Conference title in nine years, beating Jefferson (Bloomington) 21-7. ... RB J.R. Hasty of No. 10 Bellevue (Wash.) scored four TDs vs. Interlake (Bellevue), giving him 24 for the season. ... No. 9 Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.) has outscored its nine opponents 431-44. ... North Pole (10-1) beat West (Anchorage) 44-13 to win its first-ever Alaska large-school state title. RB Perry Monzulla ran for 217 yards and three scores, finishing with a state single-season record 2,860 yards and 44 TDs.
