How to mask a link

Silly little question.

How do you mask the link so it's just a blurb, instead of the whole URL?

The last few years, you could just paste the URL into the body of the post and it would automatically decode the URL and give it a title but now it seems that function is lost.

Any reason why?

That always seemed to happen sporadically for me, and I thought it was a function of something done by the site where the link was being copied from.

The software that drove that functionality had a major security hole in it, I was forced to disable it for the time being to close off the opportunity for abuse.
