While I'm not sure "Chinamen" is the way to go I've about had it with hyphenated Americans. Either you're American, or you're not.

If Asian-American is a legit term then I guess I'm a European-American. Of course, we can't forget African-American. So I guess we could also have South American-Americans?

Oh wait, that leaves out Hispanics, whatever the hell that means. Apparently, it's someone whose first language is Spanish, or a native of Hispana.

But what are Americans of Canadian descent, North American-Americans?

And don't get me started on Australian-Americans, or Antarctic-Americans. :p

I basically agree. I was once told by a German woman that's what she finds the strangest in American behavior. If you ask a German, "what are you?" He says "German." Americans go down a long list of my mom was this, my dad was that, my paternal grandparents were blah and bla... and so on. American's rarely just say "I'm an American" and leave it at that.

I don't know.. maybe to the rest of the world, our "mutt-ancestry" is just assumed by saying "American"

Why can't we call ourselves Americans without the prefixed ancestrals ? I see us only as this way, No one has to tell me that a black person is an African American , Or that a Mexican is a Mexican American , or that BKB is a lawyer American, Car ipes , I can see that. Is it done solely for bias or racism on both sides ? A lot of it is.

But to me anyone who professes allegiance to our country and is a citizen and myself are all just Americans.
