How low will the NCAA and their coaches stoop?

I believe this is a great rule also. Players usually arent there after they graduaute anyways. you think Troy smith would stick around if he had another year? Bush, Linart, People are leaving way early as it is, why would someone want to stay in another year if they could make millions? The only players we are worried about jumping ship wont be there after 4 years anyways.
Troy Smith has his bachelor's degree already, and Leinart only took the one elective last year, because he didn't need any degree specific classes to grauate. Keeping guys like TS and Leinart away from their competition is exactly why the coaches want this rule repealed. The fact that it's wrong to repeal the rule makes no difference whatsoever, to them.

Troy graduated this spring, and he's coming back to play next season...

Stud players aren't playing college basketball for 5 years, regardless of where they're playing.
perhaps stud was a bad word choice... I'm envisioning the heart and soul of a George Mason team. They return a very strong team, except he runs off to florida for a year instead.

I think the year layoff is a very good rule to prevent defections.

If it's for the sake of academics, perhaps they could not count the year off against his eligibility, if he has redshirted already.

It doesn't matter to me either way, but I can see the point of the athletic departments not agreeing with this rule. We continue to forget that these players have received a free undergrad degree. If this student athlete prefers to move elsewhere for graduate school that's fine, but at minimum a release for athletic purposes doesn't seem unreasonable. Now if it is all about academics as many of you have indicated on here this student athlete has a decision to make on priority. A 5th year of eligibility or graduate school in the event a release is not granted.

Life is about tough decisions. If this rule is appealed in the favor of the athletic departments the student athlete does not have my sympathy in this case. Most of us have to go 10 to 15 years in debt to bust our ass for a degree. Why should this student athlete who received a free education based on athletic ability be released in this fashion. Again I could care less either way, but sorry my opinion the rule is a bad one as written!

If a player graduates with scholarship time still available it means he either graduated early or he redshirted or he had an injury. Whatever the scenario, he deserves not to be penalized for wanting to further his education.

We have players on our team now who have graduated. I believe Stan White and Brandon Mitchell both graduated after three years, something that's unheard of even for those that don't have the workload of a collegiate athlete. I believe both are set to have MBA's by the time they're eligibility has expired.
