no really i just wondered how long normal people keep thier cars before trading them in. my parents always got their cars through a trade account so they kept them till the dealership let them trade it in.

If you are looking to trade your car... see what they will give you (it will be low). Place an ad in the local newspaper and sell it for more than the dealer would pay... they are horrible about low balling for trade-in's...

i just got it about a year ago so I'm a year or 2 from trading it in. i get a few good deals at local car dealerships thanks to my dad's connections....but they turn around and screw me whenever they can to make up for it.

I have been told that you lose a lot of your trade in value once you hit 70K. You can also take a hit if your model has a newer version(generation) avalible. Car companies can also bitch slap current owners by offering big rebates on new vehicles. The reason I keep 'em forever is that they are gold when you buy them, shit when you trade them in...

I look for cars that changed models :) ... as you said once the "new" models hit the used car lots the older models dump in price. We purchased my wifes car that way (picked it up 3 years old, and a new body style came the year after her model... at any rate it was a nice car with about 28k miles on it. We purchased it for under half the original price).

I'm hoping this trend continues... I have my eye on the "old" BMW 540. The "new" body style came out in 2004. I'm hoping I can get a 2003 two years from now at a nice discount... we'll see...
