How long did you keep your first car

I bought a 10 year old Toyota pickup in 1996. I had it for just over 4 years, and put around 120K on it during that time. I was sick of not being able to pass anyone without redlining it, so I sold it to my brother-in-law. After my new truck dies, I'm going back to the $2500 vehicles. I miss driving beaters.

The first used car I bought on my own was an 84 Mazda RX-7 which I bought in 88, I kept it for three years until I wrecked it.

First new car was a 91 Nissan Pathfinder. After driving the RX-7 I needed some room. I kept it for two years and then upgraded to a better Pathfinder.

I haven't had a new car, and if I got rid of my present one then I would have had it for all of three days
CLEAR THE ROADS!!!

:)

Bought my first new car October 2003 and I think I'll keep it a while yet. Hope that is helpful, BN27. :p

This was actually my wife's first new car.

Believe it or not.

We bought a new Volkswagen BUG in 1972 for $1970.

We had it over 7 years. It had under 50,000 miles on it. We sold it for $1950.

Based on my add two people showed up at my house at the same time. In addition, a neighbor from across the street (who worked on VWs) saw the activity and came over. If I had three VWs, I could have sold all three. Apparently my asking price of $1950 was too low.

Has anyone else bought a new car, used it for seven years, and sold it for basically what they paid for it?

I've never purchased a "new" car... My first car was given to me when I turned 16, it died a year later (I was younger than the car...good car to learn how to drive... I took out a few trees, curbs, orange cones, saftey posts, etc with that baby  ). My second car was given to me shortly after my 17th birthday, the transmission finally gave out (it could only go in reverse when they towed it away) about five or six years later (my younger sister and brother learned to drive in that car... it took a beating from them). After that I shared a car with my brother (he still drives it to this day).... I've had my current car for about four year (and intend to keep it for at least another two, at that point we'll see what kind of shape it's in. I'd like to get another three years out of it, if at all possible. I'm not going to replace the tires, so when it needs new tires it's going bye bye... it runs fine, however the bumpers are a bit damaged... I doubt I'd get much for it, so I'm going to run it into the ground... just like I have the other cars).

First car I owned was a used Ford MavericK.
My old man drove it the first week while his truck was getting repaired.
The second night I drove it I got hit head on by a drunk driver and totalled it.
This was long before drunk driving was such a serious offense. The dude walked away. I wanted to track him down and kill him.

I have owned one new car, a turbo thunderbird back in 1983 or so. From then on I have bought used or dealer demos.

I did buy a Taurus SHO for $15,000, drove it three years while my comapny paid a monthly fee and small mileage allowance, wrote it off on taxes and got $12,000 for a trade in on it. That was as close to making money on a car as I have come.

Both my vehicles, truck and SUV, are 9 and 10 years old. I'll drive my truck until the wheels fall off. My wife wants a new vehicle but I told her she has to wait two years.

In regards to basically driving a car for free... my current car I purchased well under market value. Two folks have hit me (both parking lot accidents) and I received insurance money both times. I have not repaired the damage, and have recouped half the cost of the vehicle... lucky for me there is a market in beat up Wranglers... I figure I'll drive the car for six or so years at a total cost of a couple grand max... not bad...

I didn't get much for the front end (the bumper was slightly twisted and part a small part of the front body, near the turn signal was damaged)... the back end was much worse. The damage was to the bumper, and a couple of quarter panel's (one of which went all the way up past the passenger door). Although it doesn't look too bad, the cost to repair was several grand...

I wouldn't mind some car smashing into it (while I wasn't in it) and get a check for the totaled amount... doubt that will happen...

People will still pay for damaged Wranger's. So I'll still get a few grand when I sell it (heck if it wasn't damaged the trade-in value is only 1/3 less than what I paid four years ago... the person that sold the jeep to me didn't know their stuff... I got several grand under trade-in  )
