For those who live in Columbus and prefer non-aged beef, try the Hereford steaks from Fresh Market. They are superb. Their filets are especially good, though it's hard to find one that goes less than 10 ounces (a bit too much for me, as I'd rather have one that's 6-8 oz. size).
If you want to spend a bit more for dry-aged beef, Whole Foods has marvelous steaks.
In either case, the better the beef the rarer I like it. Both my wife and I like it cold and bloody inside, and we're nearing 60. I'm not one of you guys who wants it cooked more as I get older.
I'd really rather have either rare venison backstrap or rare ostrich, both extremely tasty red meats. But good beef is a real treat, especially if (like me) you avoid having it more than once a week or so.
Final question: we've now had poor experiences at all the major steak places in Columbus - all 3 Hyde Parks, Ruth's Chris, and Mitchell's. Morton's was reliable but is now closed. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good steak place other than these? Is J. Gilbert's (Crosswoods) worth a try?
