Well, to be honest, the 'proper nomenclature' is soft drink. The term soda water (the precursor to all soft drinks) dates to 1802, while the terms soda fountain, soda pop and soda jerk emerge in the latter part of the same century.
My beef with pop, specifically, is that one term (soda) has a solid, etymological base, and the other (pop) is fuckin' stupid. Pop, by itself, is onomatopoetic midwest crap. Do you call guns bangs, or dogs barks?
I think it's time for this again:
Lighten up, Francis.
