How do you feel about rival players once they go pro?

WolverineMike

Head Coach
Once a kid leaves a rival program, do you continue hating him on the sole fact that he played for a rival, or is just a college thing?

Me personally, once they go pro, I don't really think about where they went to college. As a Rams fan, Orlando Pace was always one of my favorite players, and now Laurinitis(sp) is a joy to watch. Guys like Joey Galloway, Beanie, Troy Smith, and Chris Speilman were always fun to hate on Saturday, but became or are now some of my fave's to watch on Sunday.

But David Boston will never be on that list.....LOL.

It doesn't have to be football either. I'm pretty excited to see what ET can do in the NBA. Jimmy Jackson had a pretty nice career in the NBA. Michael Redd is awesome, if he could get healthy, and same with Odom.

What say you?

Yeah - I agree with this. Provided the behave like professionals and play well, clean slate.

For the most part I agree. If they are jerks in college and there have been Buckeyes on that list, I have a hard time rooting for them still. I have even broken down and rooted and appreciated pro's from UM. But there are a few that I will never, ever, never, ever root for. My second favorite team has always been and will always be anyone who plays or beats UM.

I had lunch with Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson, Jim Mandich, Dan Dierdorf, Mike Hart, Jim Harbaugh, Rick Leach, Tim Biakabutuka, Prescott Burgess, Anthony Carter, Tai Streets, Marlin Jackson, Anthony Thomas, Mario Manningham, John Kolesar, Shawn Crable, Tom Brady, Elvis Grbac, Chris Perry, and Ron Kramer today.

It was good to finally sort out my feelings with all of them and and bury the hatchet.

Now if I can figure out where to hide all of those bodies ...

I'm not one to switch opinions of a person. If I hated the prick in college I hate the prick in the pro's.

If one of them lands on the Steelers then I just make the best of it and try and forget where he's from but if it were a significant douchebag I'd have no problem tuning the Steelers out for a while until he was gone.

I tolerated Larkin and Sabo on the Reds in the early 90's but it was hard. Woodley playing for Pittsburgh is a constant annoyance but he's just another linebacker, they grow them like corn, he's easily replaced.

I usually feel the same way about a player from college to pros as well. If they opened their mouth and said something stupid in college, or did something stupid, I'm probably going to hold it against him at the next level still. He's the same person, until he shows otherwise. Matt Leinart is a perfect example. Couldn't stand the guy in college, he whined about how he fell in the draft, even had an ESPN cover where he interrogates the teams that passed on him and asks why. Then he gets benched, I loved it. What's even better is now he's competing with Anderson to find out who is worse, it just keeps getting better.
There are players that I don't care about once they get to the next level, but it depends on how they carry themselves. Couldn't stand Matt Ryan when he was at Boston College, but it was strictly a BC thing. He's one of those players that I'm fine with now, or I'm at least apathetic.

Unless the player was particularly antagonistic in college, I don't care where they came from. it's not like you fill your roster with sweet gentle folk that you want courting your daughter. You want tough gladiators with a violent streak. Even the more pampered QBs are usually pricks, but as long as they are also efficient, who cares?

With rival players, I'm more aware of their weaknesses and less willing to bring them in as developmental guys. Morgan Trent obviously had room to improve but I wanted no part of him. Conversely, I'm more patient with players I like, Gibson or McCoy as later round projects.

I don't want mike hart on the redskins. I would be fine with almost anyone else if they can play.

I'm completely random.

I think it all depends on how good the player is. If he's fun to watch, I don't have a problem. If he blows, it's because he's from Michigan. :p

There aren't many rivals on the teams I root for, so it's not too big of an issue.
