Back on topic.....I have thought about this a lot.
My wife's family is riddled with an 'intelligence gene' if you will.....several uncles in Mensa.....yada yada. The closest Mensa relative went to Northwestern (full ride engineer) but later failed out because he couldn't cope in a setting outside of home (and Upper Arlington.) To my knowledge he never finished school and he hasn't been able to hold down a steady job. I also worked with a guy who was smart as a whip but was lazy as all get out. He can't hold down a job either.....and he hasn't even finished (or started) his disertation.
On the other hand.....I know some pretty industrious folks who don't have a formal education who own their own business and are pretty well off. These people have learned a skill and have adapted that skill into a career.
A piece from what NYB said.....I think this boils down to adaptation. You need some street smarts and enough intellect to get the idea.....too far to either side of the pendulum and you may not be adaptable.
Look at how humans have progressed through time......through adaptation. Sure, smarts played a role and the helping of common sense was the ingredient that allowed the fittest to survive.
Just my take on it.

that being said i subscribe to the old farmer theory. those guys typically are the smartest people ive ever been around. they may not tell you, but if you ask theyll shoot straight with you. drawing out years and years of practical knowledge and know how can never be overlooked. that being said you have to keep in mind that they are small business owners and for years have been competing on the world market...

Intelligence is something that cannot be defined, it is something that is earned through conversation and demonstration..... That is the best way that I can describe it......
Some of the smartest people that I've ever met never went to college. I know a kid who nearly flunked out of high school, but could take an engine apart and put it back together at the age of 10. In my opinion that is brilliant. School doesn't make someone smart, it only demonstrates that they are trainable. That being said, many pursue a quest for knowledge through academics.......others choose to do so through life experience. Both have their similarities as well as their differences.
I believe that there are 2 different kind of people out there when it comes to being intelligent. One being those who question those who question. The other is those who question why things are they way that they are....... Neither are more important..........but I feel that both are necessary to nurture discovery and growth in the world.
