How about that Defense???

I Feel So Bad For Our Defense!!!!!

What a waste of a great defense. If we had any resemblence of an offense at all this team would be unstoppable. People who didnt watch the game look at the 17 points that PSU scored and think our D didnt play well. I just want to give a standing ovation to our defensive players and coaches. They play their hearts out every week, and I just wish our offense would take a look at the type of intensity the D plays with.

Edit: No bashing--21

This defense is insanely good. I said it earlier and will say it again. The fact they have to share the field with that offense is insulting to the defense.

I applaud the heart and desire the D has... I look forward to see the D on the field more often than not just to appreciate their abilities. Sadly.

Still #1 in rushing defense

Though they did missed sevaral tackles of Robinson and Hunt, they did very well over all. I love this group of defenders, especially the seniors! I feel sadden for them going out with two loses that could easily have been won if we had an offense. I look forward to see them on Sundays! That Penn State Lb is pretty good and will play on Sunday too.

:oh: :io:

I think we were all expecting a defensive battle, weren't we? We got it. It's heartbreaking and frustrating to see Ohio State within 7 points all through the 2nd half and they can't score.

But what I do like is that even though Ohio State couldn't score in the 2nd half, they stayed within 7 points the whole time.

Just thought I would continue this thread from last week. Couple of interesting stats regarding our rushing defense. We have faced 7 of the top 100 runners in the country.

RB Our Game Season
Brandon Murphy 15/48 = 3.2yds/carry 5.21yds/carry 126.67yds/game
- He was 2.01yds/carry under and was 78.67 yds under his season avg.

Jamal charles 10/26 = 2.6yds/carry 8.52yds/carry 95.17yds/game
- He was 5.92yds/carry under and was 79.17 yds under his season avg.

Vince Young 20/76 = 3.8yds/carry 5.51yds/carry 68.83yds/game
- He was 1.71yds/carry under and was 7.17 yds over his season avg.

Lynell Hamilton 7/10 = 1.4yds/carry 4.04yds/carry 67.33yds/game
- He was 2.64yds/carry under and was 57.33yds under his season avg.

Albert Young 10/25 = 2.5 yds/carry 5.91yds/carry 102.14yds/game
- He was 3.41yds/carry under and was 77.14yds under his season avg.

Tony Hunt 16/64 = 4yds/carry 6.41yds/carry 97.57yds/game
- He was 2.41yds/carry under and was 27.57 yds under his season avg.

Javon Ringer 16/76 = 4.75yds/carry 7.06yds/carry 80.00yds/game
-He was 2.31yds/carry under and was 4 yds under his season avg.

Overall that is 94 carries for 325 yds. avg. 3.45yds/carry

That is outstanding considering that is against guys that are averaging 6.09yds/carry and 91.1yds/game

So that means we hold guys to 2.64yds/carry less than what they are averaging.

Keep in mind those season totals involve our game so if we would take them out ever single person stats would go up and it would look even more lopsided what we do to runner.

Well the Indiana running back Chris Taylor is averaging 79yds/game and 5.11yds/carry so that means we will hold him to 2.47 yds a carry.

So for him to get to 100 yds he has to get 41 carries.

I say we have the best run defense in the nation. Even know Nebraska has the number 1 by avg. They played Maine(DivIAA) and Pitt who don't have rusher in the top 100. They have faced 4 backs in the top 100 to our 7.

It is quite amazing...if you look at what teams this defense has had to play against, the rest of the schedule should look easy, as far as our defense is concerned. All around we've played a really tough schedule so far. This could help the Buckeyes down the stretch.

There is not a front 7 in college football I would take over our front 7. We are the envy of college football from a run defense standpoint. We've proved oursleves against some of the best in college football, and will continue to do so (Sutton, Hart, Maroney).

With that said, our defensive backfield needs to play more physically than they did this past weekend. There was always one WR that was wide open, and Stanton ALWAYS found him, leading him to be 20 of 24 passing at one point. Indiana will be great practice for the rest of the Big Ten season for those guys. The unsung hero award of that game goes to Tyler Everett. He was playing lights out until his unfortunate injury (nearly had a pick, too, jumping over his man to get a hand on a ball).

Well, it was a great game by the Defense all around. But, you'd have to admit, the Penn State University Defense was better in every way. Additionally, when they needed the turnovers, they forced them and got the takeaways.

I'm a tad late with this reply since I just now saw what Cheese Breath just wrote: "The Penn State University Defense was better in every way"...say what?! If that's so, why did we have more total yards, more first downs, and more time of possession, despite playing in Crappy Alley's most electric atmosphere's ever? As for "when they needed the turnovers, they forced them and got the takeaways", the only one you "forced" was the fumble at the end of the game when our TE whiffed on a block. The other turnover was a result of a bad decision on the part of our QB. Your linebacker, Poundingthepudski, our whatever his name is, is a great player, but other than that, I wasn't too impressed. Hey, your secondary did a great job this past weekend up in Michigan, didn't they? Congrats on the close-but-no-cigar loss.

In the interest of not starting a new thread for what would likely be two posts, I've got a marginally related statistics question posted in this thread.

If a defensive player forces a ball carrier out of bounds, does he get credited with a tackle? And if so, where is the line drawn? Does the defender have to lay hands on the ball carrier and push him OB, or just be close enough that he can be said to have forced the carrier OB?
