Watch out, Takeru Kobayashi. Here comes Joey Chestnut.
Chestnut, a 22-year-old civil engineering student at San Jose State, ate 50 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes Thursday at the Las Vegas qualifier for a spot at the table at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Dog day afternoon: Joey Chestnut celebrates his American record.

The mark sets the American hot dog eating record, beating the 42 hot dogs and buns swallowed by Sonya Thomas last year. In the same competition, Chestnut had only eaten 32.
"I was hoping to do 40," said Chestnut, the champion in pork ribs (5.5 pounds in 12 minutes), waffles (18.5 in 10 minutes) and jalapeno poppers (118 in 10 minutes). "I did 48 at home, but it's always harder to do it in front of a crowd."
Kobayashi, who flies to Coney Island each year from Japan for the hot dog eating championship held July 4, holds the world record of 53½ hot dogs and buns. He has won the last five contests, but in two of those victories he ate less than 50 hot dogs and buns.
"This could be so critical to our sport," said George Shea, chair of the International Federation of Competitive Eating, which sanctions more than 100 eating contests, including the Nathan's event. "It's never good for the same athlete to win so many years in a row. The Fourth of July has been stolen from Americans because of Kobayashi's dominance and now America has someone who they can get excited about."
"I'm going to push harder on our Independence Day to take the title back," said Chestnut, who is 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds. "My brother is in the National Guard in Iraq and there will be a lot of people behind me." Chestnut estimates he has won $50,000 in cash and prizes in a year on the circuit, including a car and ring after prevailing in the Wing Bowl. In the event, which took place in Philadelphia, he ate 173 buffalo wings in 30 minutes.

Nice to insert some subtle racism...I feel less of an American because some kid from a country we converted to democracy can eat more of our favorite ballpark snack than any of us. :roll1:

I watched some weird show on Discovery channel.. or maybe TLC.. years and years ago. I think it was an hour-long deal about eating contests. They showed that Japanese guy eating something like 40 hot dogs, or whatever he ate the first time he won it. Then it showed a balloon that was roughly the size of a human stomach, and then that same balloon with 40 hot dogs and buns inside it. It looked pretty gross.

Is there anywhere that serves hot dogs in Medina? I'm hungry.

Kobayashi would fuck 98% of us up. The guy is ripped to the max.

I could probably eat about 15, not in any kind of time limit though.

The guy also has the record for eating rice balls and cow brains; as well as Krystal hamburgers (I think they are like White Castles)

This was his fifth consecutive win at the big dance. However, newcomer Joey Chestnut recently challenged Kobayashi, leading him during the first seven minutes of the eight-minute Krystal hamburger contest. Kobayashi overcame the deficit in the final minute to defeat Chestnut, 67 Krystals to 62, and once again relish victory.

</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>There is an century-old prophesy within the competitive eating community, dismissed by most, that foretells the rise of the One Eater, a woman who will electrify America's gurgitators and lead them to international victory once again. Like Joan of Arc before her, this eater will be slender of stature, but mighty in strength. In recent months, the prophesy has been mentioned more and more frequently as the eaters have watched Sonya Thomas excel in nearly every contest she enters.

This amazing eater was named IFOCE 2003 Rookie of the Year and was nearly unbeaten in competition in 2004, except for one highly controversial loss to Dale Boone in a baked bean eating contest in which the beans were said to be far too hot. (Boone somehow got hold of a jug of water that he used to cool his beans.) Sonya has quickly mastered the sport and the rest of the eaters appear to be watching, dumfounded, seemingly waiting for her to assume her rightful position at the top of the game.

However, in 2005, Sonya was tested by other American eaters, most notably by Joey Chestnut, who beat her in Waffle House waffles and in Krystal hamburgers. Many Americans remain hopeful that Sonya will fulfil the prophesy and beat Kobayashi -- but can she do it? Is she the one?

Sonya is single and lives in Alexandria, VA.

Kobayashi won again, setting a new record with 53 3/4. Chestnut was leading most of the way, and I think ended up with 52.

I'm sure they both went backstage and barfed their guts out. :tongue2:
