they are ok as long as you have a good projector and a good screen. it will look like shit if you just use a bed sheet

I'd still invest in a TV instead.

That's pretty slick. I may well try that if I run across a dead LCD monitor sometime. I'm not gonna go buy one, but If I ever find a dead one, that will be one of my first thoughts. It would make for a nice big-screen in the dorm room.

I would only be using it for movies and the occasional football game. I will watch my Sony TV for most regular programming.

you have never seen a good screen. My is the exact same material that movie screens are made of, that is why they are so pricey.

FWIW there were actually LCD screens designed specifically for overhead projectors back in the day...unfortunately I'm pretty sure they topped out at 640x400.

If you are serious about a DIY projector the Lumenlab style designs can be pretty damn good. There is a ton of info on their forums from various builders as well...

Search is over. I purchased a Mitsubushi projector on ebay last week. The picture looks great is 6' X 9' in my family room.
