FWIW there were actually LCD screens designed specifically for overhead projectors back in the day...unfortunately I'm pretty sure they topped out at 640x400.

If you are serious about a DIY projector the Lumenlab style designs can be pretty damn good. There is a ton of info on their forums from various builders as well...
