I had a guy miss rotted floor joists in the master bathroom in a house with a crawl space..shower fell through the floor 4 months after buying. Luckily insurance covered it. Same guy missed an improperly built front porch that cost me 5K and an improperly plumbed HVAC unit in the ceiling, which leaked and damaged my celing. But hey he took pictures!

Most states don't have any certification process and it is difficult to sue them. I did get some money out of him. He came highly recommended....

Did he come recommended by your agent or mortgage company? Sounds like maybe not but just checking since anytime either of those push for someone or recommend someone I would make sure to never, ever hire them.

In the future I'd recommend hiring a top general contractor to do an inspection, they know far better what to look for and obviously will be working harder to find any issues since they wouldn't mind the extra business as well - or if you're in the Northeast Ohio area, I'll gladly come poke around

Recommended by Real Estate Agent...of course this was when we lived in NC so nuff said right....
