Podunk northern schools are good at hockey for the same reason Podunk warm-weather schools are so good at baseball--because they're in season 10 months out of the year, and every kid in that region played those sports 10 months every year they were growing up.

ps. Cornell is unique in that it's both at once a private Ivy league school and a state public school. I'll spare the boring details.
