History In The Making?

Carmen Ohio

All-American
If Ohio State and Michigan each go 11-0 and we beat them in a classic match-up, it seems that among the possibilities is a rematch in the National Championship game. If USC loses late, the SEC is involved in their usual scrum and West Virginia hiccups against Louisville or Rutgers... why not?

I actually would rather play someone like USC or auburn. Imagine the list of beaten teams. Mich. ND. Texas.PSU. Iowa. Mich and USC or AUB WOW!

I hate to ask, but are you referring to a rematch with TSUN or with Texas? Both are possible, I suppose, but losing late still matters more than losing early. Texas would have to be more likely.

it would depend how far ahead in the voting michigan is. my friends and i were debating this over the weekend and we came to the conclusion that it probably can't happen. however, i'm sure the media would be all over that so who knows.

Thing is this. For that unlikely scenario Michigan would have to be a prohibitive number 2 coming into the game. Michigan loses - say by less than the spread which will be tight as, well picture your favorite RR beaver shot in this space, and

All other contenders would already have to hold one loss going into their Conference championship games, or
in the case of USC,
already have ditched 2 games before upending Notre Dame in the Coliseum

and even then it isn't a sure fire thing. Why?

Because TV wants a mix-and-match not a MidWest meltdown for the BCS championship game.

Will SOMEONE please explain to me the attraction of a rematch with a team you have already beaten. I have been reading various people supporting the idea ever since we beat Miami and their fans refused to accept it.

If you have already beaten a team and play them again there are two possible outcomes.

1. You win. Now you can say you have the better team. Of course, you could have said that the first time you beat them.

2. You lose. Now the other team can say they have the better team. Not only did they win, they won when it "counted". And the win you previously celebrated is discredited, tossed to the wind, wasted.

I just don't get it. This is history that does not need to be made.

Exactly. I'd much rather have a crack at Auburn, USC or WVU.

Anybody who wants a rematch in the BCS Championship Game should get a refresher course on the 1975 season. tOSU Defeated UCLA 41-20 in Los Angeles in the regular season.

There was a rematch in the Rose Bowl, #1 tOSU vs #11 UCLA: 10-23, bye-bye NC, hello NFL job for Dick Vermeil.

Suppose #1 OSU and #2 scUM are the only unbeatens when we meet, OSU beats scUM and drops them to #4 or 5. Then later in the next couple of weeks, #2, #3 and #4 lose, regular season or conference championship games. scUM would rise to #2. That's the only scenarion I can think of.

OK, it's really very simple. If you want to "make history", there is a way to do it that every team dreams about; and we really have a shot at it this year.

The team we beat in Glendale will likely stay #2. If Mr. Carr does to his bowl game monkey what he did to his Irish monkey, scUM has a good chance of ending up #3 or #4. If Texas wins out, including their bowl game; they'll be the other team at #3 or #4.

That would mean that we would have beaten #2, #3 and #4 in the final rankings.

That is the kind of history that I would like to see.

But I'll take a championship anyway I can get it.

OK, so the question is: Has any #1 ever had wins over the #2, #3, and #4 teams in the final poll in a given year?

Once again, usign the AP poll only, it has happened twice:

1971 Nebraska defeated Oklahoma, Colorado, and Alabama.

1943 ND defeated Iowa Pre-Flight, Michigan, and Navy. ND stayed #1 although they actually lost their last game to Great Lakes Naval Station (who had 2 losses and finished #6).
