Edmund Hillary, first atop Everest, dies
By RAY LILLEY, Associated Press Writer

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Sir Edmund Hillary, the unassuming beekeeper who conquered Mount Everest to win renown as one of the 20th century's greatest adventurers, has died, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced Friday. He was 88.

The gangling New Zealander devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of Nepal and took his fame in stride, preferring to be called "Ed" and considering himself just an ordinary beekeeper.

Edmund Hillary came to speak to our school when I was a very young lad. A very engaging speaker on stage, Edmund Hillary was, surprisingly, equally approachable after the ceremonies. He would take time to listen to and answer even the most idiotic question from any member of the audience, all without feigning any indulgence.

It has remained my impression that such a collected response is a quality of benign aloofness only those who have been there, and climbed to the top of the mountain, can assume.
