When Star Trek was first broadcast on September 8, 1966, in the USA, the science fiction series was not a great success. The show was initially going to finish after two series, but ran to a third sequel before low viewer numbers caused it to be taken off the air. Now, four decades later, Star Trek has become one of the world’s most popular repeat series with armies of fans. A key factor for its success was the futuristic technology it featured. Budding scientists were fascinated and took it as a source of inspiration. In "How Techies Changed the World with William Shatner", Captain James T. Kirk’s alter ego William Shatner explains the influence Star Trek had on science. "Captain Kirk" shows how Star Trek gave a generation of scientists the ambition to make the futuristic gadgets a reality.
