Hiking Backpacks/Rucksack

What do you see yourself doing primarily...Day hiking? Short weekend/overnight trips? Week or longer thru-hiking? Something more technical (mountaineering, snowboarding etc)?

Here's a good calculator to help you determine just how large of a pack you need. REI also has a nice guide on choosing features.

Quality brands include Arc'Teryx, Osprey, Gregory, Mountain Hardware, Granite Gear, Deuter,
If the 'ultra light' bug bites you then you might want to look into SMD and/or ULA.

The best thing to do is go to a good outdoor store that specializes in backpacking/hiking & try on a variety of packs from different manufacturers. Finding one that fits you perfectly is by far the most important step.

It durability is your #1 priority it is hard to go wrong with Arc'Teryx.

Probably not the best guy to ask on that front. I find most of the 'TACTICAL' brands are overpriced, heavy & trail behind the civilian outdoor gear in features. Remember you are paying a premium for the 'TACTICAL' label from a lot of those brands.

Of course I'm also the guy who still uses modified ALICE packs. A large hung off of a Mystery Ranch frame & a medium that works fine as a go bag.

FWIW the USMC ILBE was designed by Arc'Teryx.

I wouldn't go that far. Maybe the original poster is looking for something that he can also use as a patrol ruck. *shrug*

I'm just basing on my recommendations strictly on the stated use (ie civilian light duty hiking).

Just turned in the ILBE to get this. The FILBE

Haven't humped with it yet, so I don't know what to expect. Looks like you can pack quite a bit of gear in it, so we shall see how my back & shoulders hold up to this one.

I was a fan of the move...but in fairness I'm an external frame whore.

Think of it as a MOLLE without the breakage problems that occurred with the Gen 1-3 versions. I actually have an ALICE hung off of the same frame (Down East's 1606). I originally bought the frame for an HSGI Trash bag but it's now on a Mystery Ranch NICE frame.
