LONDON, Dec 12, 2005 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Paul McCartney says Walt Disney's "Bambi" and "Dumbo" inspired him to become an animal rights activist.
"If you think of Bambi, its mum gets killed by a hunter, and I think that made me grow up thinking hunting isn't cool," McCartney, 63, is quoted as saying in Monday's Daily Mail. "It always gave me that idea. You look through a lot of these great stories, Dumbo, his mum is quite badly treated.
"A lot of these classic stories, through their efforts, kids, as I once was, have grown up feeling it's a bad idea to be cruel to animals."
McCartney and his late wife, Linda, created their own line of meat-free foods and were voracious campaigners for animal rights. His current wife, Heather, is also an active campaigner for animal rights.
McCartney has written a children's book with Philip Ardagh called "High in the Clouds" about a squirrel's quest to find a land where animals live in freedom and without fear.
