Here's where I mumble aimlessly for a bit to get thoughts about this team down.

I'm quite glad that this year, discussion about who should or will play at QB is because we have guys that are playing well enough to deserve playing time. Early to mid last season, it was more about who was going to do the least damage. Until Michigan, neither impressed. We can disagree about that, but it's my honest perspective, and it takes into consideration the timing of Ginn's emergence. Then Smith had what can only be described as an epic performance against the Weasels. Following that, Zwick had the gutsy and impressive performance in the bowl, and a very solid (not flashy, but that seemed to be the gameplan) performance today in which it seemed clear to me that he has really matured. I once worried about Smith's decision-making, maturity, touch, ability to stand in the pocket, and leadership (not to be confused with having support of the team) -- I don't anymore, at all, on any of those counts. I once worried about Zwick's confidence, vision, mobility, ability to learn and adapt, and emotional command over the team -- I don't anymore.

I will freely admit that I'm more 'excited' about the potential of the offense under Smith, but I'll also say that I am *equally* confident with either signal caller based on their recent performances, and what's been coming out of practices. I will have no issues whatsoever in regards to who Tress starts next week, who gets more playing time, etc. I think we've got two gamers who each present their own distinct positives, and two more guys in the wings (though clearly RS isn't losing his RS) who have shown serious potential as well. Very easy year to be more concerned about the silver helmet, than who is underneath it. And very nice not to feel like everything is going to go into the toilet if, Dog forbid, we lost one during the season.

It's a damn good problem to have, for a team used to starting seasons with questions about who the starter is going to be, and whether or not they'll be good enough to carry us forward. That was true with Krenzel, Zwick, and Smith. This year definitely feels more like "we good both ways, now let's win some games."

So, "go Troy and Justin", lead us to yet another electrifying win at night in the Shoe. Let's see both of you make it effectively impossible for Tress to settle on one. Not because I like the platoon approach, I really don't, but because that means that we're getting more quality play out of these guys.

The one thing I hope is that people who really polarized themselves in the past, in one camp or another, can put that behind them enough to really enjoy the games no matter who is under center at that specific moment.

I'm trying hard not to get too excited about this team, for the sake of having grounded expectations, but I struggle to think of a season where I felt this good about every phase of the game, our approach, our depth, our schedule, etc. No matter what happens, it's going to be a damn good year. But then what Buckeye football season isn't?

Right now, I don't see a game on the horizon that I won't have us objectively favored in. I know some visiting Horns would take issue with that, but for me it comes down to when and where the game is. I know Iowa is tough, they lit up Ball State, but it's Ball State, and a Ball State that just suspended 13 of its players before the game. Not saying they're (Iowa) not going to be one of our tougher games, just saying that I've seen nothing yet that would have me give them the early predictive lean. Michigan? Prove to me you can defend extreme athleticism. If you can't, this year might be the worst beating we ever give you Weasels.

It's only one game, but I felt instantly better about our defensive tempo today. It's been lacking something the past few years, I'm not prepared to blame Dantonio or Snyder for that directly, but on the flip side of that coin, welcome to the team, Heacock. Nice to meet you. :)

How many NFL teams that have seen what Vrabel does for New England are going to start drooling over Bobby Carpenter? It's a long ways off, and a lot of playing to go, and LBs in particular have had rough going in the 1st round lately... But we could reasonably have more 1st round Buckeyes this year than we have in quite a while. Not that it's relevant to this season, except in regards to how damn deep and talented this team is.

OOC opposition is going to say "it was just Miami(OH)" since they don't really get the MAC, but like I said, it's *hard* not to start letting personal expectations and excitement go sky high. We win next week, and I don't know how well I'll be able to keep myself in check on that front. We win convincingly, and I'll put the Rose Bowl up on the front page in our schedule.

Anyway, it's late, I'm tired and not breathing well, so excuse the rambling nature of the post -- but just wanted to think out loud.

Damn it's good to be a Buckeye.

you are entirely TOO self deprecating... that was some outstanding analysis...

i think that i can 'somewhat' echo that sentiment as well... in '02 i was a nervous wreck for nearly every game... in '03 i was a nervous wreck as well, but for slightly different reasons. after all, there was the added pressure of being the Defending National Champs... last year, i was a mess... i distinctly remember the first game last year-- l was in the Sports Book talking to a few very knowledgeable football fans, and one guy said something to the effect that the Buckeyes were going to have a down year. i knew he was right, but i didn't want to believe it... per the Buckeyes extremely high standards, that opinion was right, and after the Iowa game, i was at a total loss... i remember someone dinging me for saying that we would struggle to beat Mt Union if the Buckeyes continued to play like that... but the Buckeyes DIDN'T continue to play like that... they scrapped their original philosophy, and turned the season around...

then, the confidence began to build as Troy became more and more comfortable on the field... even though we had 4 turnovers against Purdue, i was happy with what i saw from the offense, from a strictly 'make some headway' type of outlook... then came the scUM beatdown, and the Alamo shellacking of a pretty decent Ok St team...

which brings us to the '05 campaign... when i woke up this morning, maybe for the first time since '96 or '98, i was ABSOLUTELY confident that we were going to destroy the Redhawks... and, for the most part, we did... yeah, there were a couple mis-cues, and we went into halftime with a 20-0 lead, when, if the O was clicking on all cylinders, we should have been up 35-0... but i was actually HAPPY that we weren't perfect... it gives the guys something to work on this week, and a reason to strive to get better... i think that being perfect in the first couple games was part of Coop's problem... he didn't have too much to work on as the season progressed... after all, when you are 100% perfect in Game 1, there is no where else to go but down...

all in all, i was VERY happy with the effort... the O was quite effecient, the D was simply lights out, and the Special Teams were excellent...

i think that when you factor in how well the Buckeyes performed against a quality opponent, versus the 60-whatever field day that the Horns had, i just can't help but be confident that we passed a pretty tough first test with flying colors, whereas the Horns merely had a review session... at this point i am quite tempted to start circling Jan 4 on my calendar... i think it's time to start saving money for a trip to Pasadena...

GO BUCKS!!! Rose Bowl or Bust!!!

Great write up. I too have a special feeling about this team. These guys are a totally different group from 2002 though. In 2002, I knew that we would pull each game out thanks to our stifling D, solid ST play, and a fundamentally sound Offense that would hang just enough points for us to win. I felt that way in 2003 as well until Wiscy shook my confidence in Camp Randall, and truth be told I wasn't too confident going into Ann Arbor that year either. The 2003 team just didn't feel as "special" to me.

2004 started with slightly less expectations for me. I was expecting a 9-3, maybe 10-2. Reasonable expectations after losing 14 to the NFL draft. We all know what happened the first two months of the season, no need to go into that. But with the improvement we showed blowing out another overrated scUM team, and a convincing bowl win, I was brimming with confidence.

2005 is a whole new ballgame. This team has as many, if not more weapons than our 1998 offense. I am confident that either QB can get the job done now, and I have been as harsh a Zwick critic as anyone. With all these weapons at WR, defenses will be forced to remain honest, and we will have a consistent running game for the first time since early in the 2002 season, when MoC was healthy and terrorizing defenses. I think the speed of Pittman and Wells, and a battering ram like Schnittker will make it difficult to feel comfortable. And this doesn't even take into account what Haw(who I was very excited about this spring until, well....:pimp: ) could contribute. This defense seems to have the potential to eclipse that 2002 unit; and that says a lot. Finally with Teddy and Santonio running around on returns, that is just another way to score. I have heard non-stop from people "you guys are in trouble without Nugent". Well, not to take anything away from NUUUUUGE(one of my all-time favorite Buckeyes), I really don't think we are going to be in many of those situations this year, and from what I've heard and seen of Huston, the dropoff doesn't look that large.

This is going to be a special season folks, lets enjoy it:biggrin: .

:oh: :io: :osu: :gobucks3: :gobucks4:

Thanks Clarity.

Yet another outstanding post. Right on the mark. Trenchent, objective, informed, and benevolent. You have transcended your user name for years from Bucknuts to BP, and are a major reason why I'm here and not squandering my middle age years on drink and lascivious women.

Squandering?

Great post, great points as always. And as always written to serve as a springboard for other thoughts.

I think it is an unlikely cooincidence that both Smith and Zwick underwent magical transformations late last season. But neither am I willing to give the bulk of the credit to Ginn - although he certainly deserves a nice slice. IMO it was our line that came into being down the stretch. You simply don't have an offense without a line regardless of how many Ginn's you have (although a poor offense can look pretty good if you have enough Gin's).

But that is good news, because not only has our line arrived, but the talent is there to ensure it keeps getting better.

The one thing I hope is that people who really polarized themselves in the past, in one camp or another, can put that behind them enough to really enjoy the games no matter who is under center at that specific moment.

I share that wish, but human nature (as proven by fans over and over again) dictates it wont work this way. The only way we will not have an uproar over the QB is if we go undefeated. If we lose the real reason will be irrelevant. It will be because the wrong QB started, or the right QB was pulled too soon. You can take that to the bank.

I know Iowa is tough

There is no game in which I have more confidence in our winning. Texas has been on OSUs minds since the recruiting class of '02 enrolled. But Iowa has been burning in their stomachs since they walked off the field in Iowa City. Texas has the talent to stand toe to toe with OSU. Iowa does not.

I like out chances against Texas. We WILL beat Iowa.

Exactly. I couldn't sleep last night thinking about the Texas game. But I know that even if we should somehow lose that one we are going to have a great, great season.

nice post guys

I guess iam more worried than most I seen a few things that need to be corrected this week or we are in some trouble. That said this team looks really special regardless of who is taking the snaps. I just don't want it were we look for teddy ballgame so much we take other weapons out of the game.

I never worry about this teams ability to play well in a big game. I have yet to see a JT team not come out strong for a big game. The Miami game was nicely played. On offense show enough to have Texas scratching their heads and on defense overwelm them with different looks, blitzes, and schemes. Nicely done. I actually felt that was one of the best defensive game plans we have seen in a long time. Heacock knows what he is doing. This guy has a ton of experience and is very well liked by his kids. I love defensives that are offensive.

I'm not so sure about being in any trouble. The only real problem I saw was with our performance in the red zone and a mobile QB might be just what the doctor ordered to fix that. Then again, so could another week of practice. We'll be fine. Texas better bring it.

While I think we played pretty well againt Miami, the crowd was not a factor, never needed to be. I think this week will be the loudest crowd ever at the 'Shoe. I anticipate that everytime Young comes to the line, the place will explode. Between that and the Buckeye Defense,it could be a long evening for Texas.

On offense, besides Ginn, it was very nice to see 4 players with 5 receptions. It's bad enough to gameplan for TG, but when you can spread the ball evenly to 4 receivers and throw in a couple others, it could pose a problem for a defense to stop.

Oh! By the way. Michigan, in their convincing win Sat., still gae up over 200 yards rushing .

I agree with Clarity on all points. With Zwick looking like a "good" college QB, Smith looking like Donavon McNabb against scUM and Boechman very solid for a first time out I think we really have something other than just a question mark.l. Today favorite cliche is "a team's biggest improvement is between game one and game two.
