Help on Travel to South Africa?

Cornerback6

Optimism Lover
Good eve fellow BP'ers,

Looking for a little advice or general info on a South Africa trip in late October/early November.

1. Has anyone done a self-guided tour through Kruger? I want to get off the beaten path and would rather rent a rover than go on a mass tour. Opinions?

2. Decent cheap lodging inside/outside/nearby Kruger? I am going alone with my camera and could care less how fancy my accommodations are so long as I am close to the park/gate entry.

3. Daily cost for 4x4 rental/gas? I am googling the heck out of this but would rather get the info straight from a trusted BP'er.

4. Best gates to see quality game? Preferably lions/hyenas/cheetahs.

5. Can I rough it out and sleep in the 4x4 in the park without getting ticketed or arrested?

ANY info or thoughts would be much appreciated.

Oh, my mistate, you said "quality game" for "lions & cheat-tas"; you probably won't see a "quality game" there for several years. However, there will be plenty of (blue & white clad) hyenas in the stands.

Well played Script. :)

Rumor has it that the only solid competition there will be a little kielbasa tug o' war going on between the seniors and the juniors. Perhaps an intense "hide the corn dog" tournament as well. Personally though, I'd rather watch a lion rip a buffalo to pieces, but hey...in Slappy Valley, "different strokes for different folks".

Thanks

Just sayin': I can't help at all on the South Africa question; however, (if you already haven't) you might try

a. some other boards too, example:

b. checking out a book from the library, example:

Good eve fellow BP'ers,

Africa is much larger than it looks on map projections used in America, apologies to Miss NC. Kruger is larger than England.

It is a professional operation. You can drive anywhere you like, but you cannot stay in the park overnight. Lions eat people, it is not Yosemite.

2. Decent cheap lodging inside/outside/nearby Kruger? I am going alone with my camera and could care less how fancy my accommodations are so long as I am close to the park/gate entry.

probably booked, it is the best time of the year. Lots of hotels nearby but remember, bigge than England. Take malaria medicine, Malaprin. important. You dont need it in cities.

Look for deals through your travel agent. Budget is probably the cheapest. petrol about the same as US, I think. Rent before you come, rates lowe from there.

4. Best gates to see quality game? Preferably lions/hyenas/cheetahs.

It would be much appreciated. The lions, cheetahs, hyenas love variety in their diet. A good program to watch, Banged Up Abroad.

There are actually more game farms in the Eastern Cape. RugbyBuck took back exciting game, but he brought it with him. :-)

RugbyBuck nearly (quite literally) knocked himself out trying to get into a Land Rover outside of Port Elizabeth. Fascinating, but not surprising, that I was the biggest danger to myself on our game drive. There was a fierce Staffordshire Terrier, though...
