I think you handled it well. I always feel bad about ripping my kids too, but they know better and chose their own consequences.

The part about making him take the money to the lady is perfect. That way, he goes through the embarrassment, which tends to stick in their head for awhile.

So, my daughter was playing with matches... and she was throwing the lit matches at her brother - who was, at the time, about 1 or maybe 2. I showed her pictures on the net of burn victims. She hasn't lit a match since.

My son, now 4, on the other hand understands 2 things... Volume and pain. You gotta pick your spots, of course, but there is no harm in a 'parental' spanking. I think it's wise, however, to let yourself cool off before spanking your kid, as if you're irate you could do real damage, and of course, that is the fear.

those pictures really were disturbing... the philosopy sure worked wonders though!

OK, I am going to ask you parent's here to help me with this one. I am not very well versed with childrens books. I would like something somewhat lengthy, but age appropriate (just out of 1st grade) and I would like it to be something about listening to your parents'.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I'll have to think about this one gl...

The first one that comes to mind is from the Chronicles of Narnia... but it's not as lengthy as you'd like.

It's not the first story written, but is the first one chronologically. I forget what it's called, but it describes the founding of Narnia.

Thematically it's what you're looking for, but it's other thematic elements might blur the message a little.
