Every time I have ever ridden in a helicopter I also jumped out of it with a parachute strapped to my back. Once I landed in a tree. That sucked. Took two weeks for the nylon burns on my hands to heal that I inflicted on myself getting the hell out of the tree.

There is a restaurant here in Columbus that used to give rides over downtown when you purchased a dinner package. I went once with my then girlfriend. there was a storm that night so the flight kept getting delayed, we ended up stone cold drunk after all the drinks they kept comping us for the delay (I guess they didn't want to feed someone then put them on a helicopter...getting them drunk made more sense?). It was pretty fun though.

CH-53e, CH46, CH47 and a Hind (don't remember the model)

Jumping out of a 53 is a blast, especially when helo-casting. Spy-rigging from a 46 is fun too, as long as the anchor keeps his hands out and controls the spin.

Just remember, when exiting a CH53 from the back... Turn Left. Turning right will ruin your whole day.

I racked up a ton of hours flying as an 'observer' on 'ash and trash' runs between Lai Khe and Saigon, mostly in Huey's, once in a LOCH and a couple in a Chinook. Flew as a door gunner on an insertion and was glad to get the story over and move on back to base camp. Made a tree top run with the psy ops folks tossing "chu hoi" leaflets onto the Ho Chi Mihn trail. Once got lost above the clouds and the pilot was shaking as he looked for a hole to slide down through. Our AO was so close to Cambodia he was afraid he'd have to put it down outside RVN. Also scared shitless because the sky was full of traffic and he had to drop down through it. Once on a Huey where we went into an orbit and the hydraulics went out, locking the ship in a turn. Thought sure I was going to buy the ranch on that one, but the air bubble vibrated out and he was able to bring it in. Rides alternated between neat as hell and a pucker factor of 9.8 out of a possible 10.

Since then I got a ride in a pre-Huey, can't remember the mil designation for it, but its like the ones filmed in the opening of MASH out over Lake Erie from Camp Perry. Beautiful ride. Looking down as a flock of cranes took to the air. Unforgettable. Caught a ride in a Kiowa during Reforger 82. We were dropping leaflets over the bad guys. What a joke. We'd have been shot down so fast.... but it was a fantastic way to see all the German villages in the Fulda Gap area.

Have yet to ride a blackhawk, but I made a conection with the Ohio NG and will look into a ride soon.
