We are seeing the same play calls we've seen during Day's whole tenure. Hartline is a great WR coach and recruiter, but if he IS responsible for calling plays right now, well, he needs a lot of work. How many schools are going to hire a guy who is basically a position coach as a Head Coach?

I think Day has a problem with Hartline. It's obvious he was not a good promotion to OC. It doesn't seem like a pretty situation.

Day's job is to put OSU in the best position to win.

Zach Smith who I take with a grain of salt, but he also has some good takes. He used the name Ed Wariner. Can't argue with that take.

Day has to make major changes and hire the most qualified coaches. Arguably he has not, and instead insulates himself with friends and Urb's flunkies.

It isn't about not getting along. Day hasn't shown a sign he has given up play calling. It didn't even seem close this year.

Hartline hasn't shown any sign he is progressing to the point he is making a impact.

Does it seem like it is working?

This may be Day's closed mindedness at even thinking that another outside coach can make a meaningful impact.

I don't know.... but arguably the O has seemed lost, and something needs changed.

I think it's fine if Hartline is a co-OC if they bring somebody else in to assist with being in the booth and calling plays.

I think the drop off this year was not having a future first round draft pick playing QB as much as anything else.

I don't know what happens behind the scenes but there are OCs who put together game plans but don't call the plays on game day. Brian Schottenheimer is the Cowboys OC but McCarthy is the play caller, for example.

Day definitely has his pet plays, some of which seem odd because they are rarely effective. How much of a role Hartline plays is impossible to tell from the outside.

The issue is Day should also be the CEO of the team. If he is devoting half his time game planning and thinking about the offensive plays, that doesn't allow for much time for the 10 other things that makes a team run smoothly.

I don't disagree. I don't want my HC being the play caller, but he doesn't seem interested in giving that up.

Smith constantly shits on Hartline because Hartline took his job and then ran laps around him at it. He will shit on literally anything Hartline does because he’s a bitter alcoholic.

People have a misconception about Hartline to OC…..it was title only to get him paid what he should be making as the best recruiter on staff.

They gave Hartline some play-calling responsibility in spring game, but it was just show. Nobody in the OSU program actually views Hartline as an OC….nobody.

To my recollection that isn't the story line at the beginning. Day was pressured last year to give up play calling and pretty much said he would incrementally, and Hartline was supposed to take the reigns. They could have just given Hartline a raise.

If nobody views Hartline as a future play caller, then there should be questions about Day's truthfulness.

I think you need to read outside the lines a bit more. They needed to pay Hartline his worth, but WR coaches don’t make that kinda jack. So they gave Hartline a “title” that allowed him to be eligible for the pay he basically deserves…..this isn’t complicated.

To some degree I agree with you. There may be some sour grapes. But I don't get the sense that he craps on the wide receivers. He did have a point that I find valid, that they are recruiting all these stud WR's, and not rotating them in, which could call into question development. He said, he was not calling for Hartline to be fired, but the futility of putting him in that role. Valid.

But the bottom line is, does Hartline bring value to being the Co-OC? That is a very valid question.

I don’t want this to come across as condescending, but in no way, shape, or form….was Hartline actually taking play calling duties from Day. It was simply done to allow OSU to pay Hartline more money and retain him in his current role.
